A brief introduction to me.

Hello all, I’m larry, I currently live in Rosslare Harbour County Wexford in Ireland. I have always been a massive ferry enthusiast in every sense of the word and as I have grown older the obsession has grown too. Currently there’s not a room without some framed ferry postcards or photos in my house, not to mention the models. To date I have only ever made kit models but in preparation for scratch building a model of the Irish Ferries ship St Killian II (greatest passenger ferry ever) I have been giving a lot of thought to building some other less detailed ships just to find my feet so here goes… Having not been able to sleep very much as a result of alcohol withdrawls from the festive season I decided to put my time to some (good) use.

Over the years Stena Line have used a ferry called Stena Seafarer on one or two occasions to relieve our regular Fishguard-Rosslare ferry (Stena Europe) while she headed to dry dock for maintenance etc. The last time she visited was in 2010, she has since been sold on to Russian interests or something so we wont see her in Rosslare again unless its on my shelf.

I had cut a hull out of some waste wood a long time back and since then its just got in the way around the house, after closer inspection I realised the hull was similar to that of the Seafarer so last night I decided to make a burst at it. After doing some maths this hull will make my model 1/308 scale, what an odd scale… The hull itself will require some more shaping at the very front of the hull but I shall get around to that later on. As you will instantly see this will be a waterline model so I shall either put it out at sea in some form of diorama or else docked in the harbour, I have not decided that yet.

great looking model Larry…..she sure brings back memories of frequent sailings from fleetwood to larne.Not the most beautiful of ships, but we really do miss them in the town, with her sisters Pioneer and Leader

keep us posted of her progress.

SOme more updates on the photobucket link there, structure is almost finished, thanks neil, i remember her being here a few times when the europe was in dry dock, never travelled on her sadly but i do love the older ships. She’s still at sea now (over in russia) under the name ANT 2, one of her sisters is with her too under the creative name ANT 1, I’ll update my gallery on here now too, im looking forward to doing all the final bits on this one

There is nothing like working with some solid wood for making things. All this fiddling about with 1mm ply and plastic gets a bit much sometimes.

I have made some very effective “carpet” boats and landing craft for the lad out of 2×2 timber and hardboard to put his die cast planes, tanks and lego figures on.

Making something as you are Larry out of the solid is almost harking back a few decades!

Building something simple is also a good way of finding out if what you finish up with is what you want to achieve with something more complicated. When I am thinking up some rascally plan I often make a mock-up out of rough hewn corrugated cardboard boxes and the hot glue gun. Sometimes the article in the flesh gives more of a feel to the model than just a drawing or picture, especially if, like I usually have to, deviate from the true scale to produce a working model.

Keep the good work up, be interesting to see the finished article!

im quite new to the ferry building scene so im picking up a lot of random things as i go, previously i have built lots of kit models, mainly cars and such but ive built a few 1/1200 ships and a 1/400 titanic, have some other 1/400 kits here waiting to be built too which i am looking forward to its just such a pity there aint more standard ferry kits available, in any case i think the seafarer was a good starting black for a good model, it was a toss up between that and stena normandica, didnt want to jump straigt in to the killian just yet, i think she may be quite complicated by comparison to what im here.

Many thanks for the posts guys, there’ll be more progress on this one tomorrow, i got side tracked today with some other pressing things
