Having finnished H.M.S. Manchester earlier this summer i am now looking for another project to keep me out of trouble over the winter, i quite like the look of the “Legend class” USCGC, but i cannot find plans anywhere, is this too modern for the plans to be available?

I don’t know of any modelmaking plans for this class. If any plans are available they are likely to be in the US.

There is a lot of coverage of these ships on the US Coastguard site so it might be worth checking out some of the contacts given there. However these are quasi naval craft and details may be classified.

Thanks Colin, i suspected that with the “legend class” being the most modern of the USCGC, technical drawings would be hard to come by!

I will continue to collect information from the www. , and hopefully get in touch with the coast guard, with a bit of luck i may be able to draw up my own plans.

Any advice on plan drawing would be useful.

After hours of searching the www. i have at last found some scale drawings of a “Legend class” cutter, with these, lots of photo’s and the overall dimensions listed on the U.S. Coast Guard website hopefully i can draw up some credible plans. These ships as you mentioned seem to have been designed in collaberation with the U.S. Navy and so have similarities with U.S. Destroyers. If anybody has any suggestions about how to draw up scale plans or any other info on this subject it would be much appreciated.

I suppose it depends just how ‘scale’ you need the hull to be and also how much information you have. For decent hull lines you really need a series of sections through the hull along the length of the ship, the more the better. Can you post the link to the drawings you mention?

The above water hull design seems fairly straightforward with the distinguishing feature being the sweeping ‘knuckle’ line.

Yes this is what i am having a bit of a headach over, the link for the drawing i found is http://s11.invisionfree.com/shipbucket/ar/t708.htm, but as you mention this does’nt give any hull cross sections.

Above the waterline, the hull does seem to be fairly straightforward with the sweeping knuckle line you mention and there are plenty of photo’s on the www.

Below is where it may be difficult, there are clearly stabilizing fins running the length of the hull below water and a keel at the stern, again i guess for stability.

Does this mean that the hull will be very rounded below water level?

Gary, some of the construction photos of this class give an indication of the hull shape. The bilge keels are normal fittings intended to reduce rolling and don’t mean that the ship is relatively unstable.

The only other suggestion I have is that you try and get hold of details of some other ship which has a broadly similar underwater hull shape – maybe an Arleigh Burke class destroyer for example, and use that as a guide. You might even be able to find a plastic kit of a modern US destroyer type which would give you some idea of the shape.

Thanks Colin,

I will follow up on your suggestions, the plastic kit seems to offer hope, even if my wife may not approve of me cutting up a newly finnished model to get cross sections!

Just use a bit of stiff wire to transfer the cross sections to paper!
