Iam building a scratch built model of an ASR launch for my son it is a easy to build plan published in marine modelling international some time ago. The plan uses balsa and ply to make the gun turrets and then paints them. However this doesnt seem to look very realistic and I would be interested in any methods of creating something looking a bit more like the real thing.

Paul, I contemplated one of these years ago and had the same thoughts. How large are they?

Deoderant (or similar – look in boots) clear plastic tops are possibly an option, or i seem to remem,ber thinking that 15Watt bulbs were about the right size (minus the metal fitting!)

Plastic forming would be the ideal, but I have never had good results with this, or making a segmented dome (like a banana skin)….or casting resin to the shape and polishing it if weight is not an issue..

Do Deans marine or another supplier make ready made domes of the approx size

This is a good site for “stuff”… they do clear domes of various sizes that could be stuck on to appropriate sized clear tube??

If you go down the route suggested by Ashley you could use very thin vinyl tape such as Trimline to add the panel lines.

gosh I forgot about EMA model supplies, they are only 15 mins away from home!!

Getting sheet material is always a fag, unless you have somewhere near, or its a car drive away…or post of course.

Its like a wonderland in these places,, all the stuff you could wish for !!

Me too, I can e-mail / call them in the morning and collect at lunchtime from work.

Its always a good idea to explore your local industrial estates for alternate suppliers and scraps / offcuts that could be useful.

paul. Let us know which method you used please.

I am not sure , after all this advice what route I would take, or for that matter what the “pro” builders amongst us would do.

I think I would likely try several methodfs and decide which one I liked the look of best?
