Has anyone tried the wood hardener instead of the dope for sealing and hardening balsa as it is a darn sight cheaper than the “shrinking dope” ?

Am concerned that it may affect the glue and I will be left with a pile of hard pieces rather than a hull !

I have heard of it being used with some success although when I tried it some time ago the surface seemed to stay a bit sticky. It’s formulated for treating wet rot really.

I would be more inclined to use thinned down sanding sealer which is designed for the job. Alternatively I have been impressed with Eze-Cote from Deluxe materials which is a one part water based polyurethane resin. It dries quickly and is easy to sand.

I tried it a while ago, and whereas it does penetrate very well, it also take a long while to go dry properly (as Colin says it stays sticky for ages). Nothing too bad, but I wouldnt bother with it again, as there are better alternatives.

I have just been using Eze-cote and it seems to do the business, especially if used with 0.6 Oz f/glass cloth (thats as fine as silk). The cloth is very easily wetted and flats down a treat.

Eze Cote is a resin covering and will work on most surfaces as long as they have been abraded to give a key. It will work fine on untreated plywood. It has the consistency of thick milk. You may need more than one coat on untreated wood.

This may be a silly question along the lines of “Of course you can.” but can you colour the shrinking dope with paint as a pre-primer ?

I was thinking of adding a couple of drops of enamel.

I don’t think adding enamel to dope is a good idea as one is olil based and the other usually cellulose. You can of course simply buy coloured dope if you want to go down that route. It is used on model aircraft.
