Can anyone please help? I am building a model of the AnnM M708, and need to know what colours the hull, above and below water line, and also the decks and cargo hatches, were painted at the time of launching Also where can I obtain winch, windlass and capstan in 1:48 scale? I look forward to a response. Many thanks Joy Tuckwell.

          Hi Joy,

Anne M was one of the Metcalf Motor Coaster Fleet, if you Google them you will get a lot of hits including this one which shows a photo of the ship.

According to my Adlard Coles reference book on Flags, Funnels and Hull Colours the colour scheme was:

          Below water- Red Oxide
Hull – Black with possibly a thin white stripe at bulwark level although this isn’t shown on the photo above, maybe because the difference in deck levels made it inappropriate.
          Upperworks – White
Funnel – Light to medium green with a white letter M (see photo)
House flag – White swallowtail with green centre and white letter M – the Google references illustrate this.

Decks would not necessarily have been painted in standard colours but would have been bare steel in which case they would typically have been painted red oxide or black at this time. (I am using Halfords Matt Black spray on my liner model where the well decks were painted steel) Try and find some museum models of the same period which will give you some options.

With regard to fittings, there are a lot of Naval and modern fittings around in 1:48th scale but not very much for merchant ships of this period. Your best bet would be to check out model shops such as Westbourne Models or Cornwall Model Boats although some manufacturers such as Model Slipway or Mountfleet Models might be able to help.

          Hope this helps,

          Colin
