I am part way through scratch building a 28″ semi-scale coast guard fast patrol boat. More for fun than a serious accurate model. What I will be needing is a forward deck gun. Something that looks the part and available commercially. Any ideas?
        Cheers,
        Tersane.

Ters,  approximately what scale is the boat? or to put it another way, what size are the figures you intend putting on it. A machine gun of the Browning variety and small shield would be very easy to make for something light, but the commercial fittings are obviously to scale and so this would limit your choice somewhat. Hi Ashley,
I am building ‘Shamrock’ , which is a Dave Milbourn plan published in MB in 1995. there is no hint as to a scale other than a reference to ‘Semi Scale’.  This is my first attempt at a boat for forty years which will make it my second one ever! I will try to upload the cover photo if I can, but don’t hold your breath.

If you are building a semi scale and not too serious craft why don’t you simply make it for yourself it doesn’t have to be that accurate. Like this drawing perhaps?
The pedestal need not be curved but a simple straight sided squaare box if needed or else a bit of dowling and the barrel the tube from a biro pen  with balsa blocks and plasticard shield etc etc ?  You could get the taper by putting the dowling in a drill and holding a file to it while turning. Assuming you don’t have a lathe   If the scale requires a larger dowel than fits the drill then put a threaded rod [long bolt say 4<6mm] through dowel and chuck that into the drill.  You could need that to secure to the boat

Sounds good to me. Even I could manage that.
                Thanks

Ters, get some figures, or make some out of card to see what size looks comfortable on your ship and then you will be able to see what sort of scale your ship is. I would have a go at making your own along the lines JC suggests. Ashley
