looking for plans – Hargreaves tug

People,

I am looking at making a model of one of the small pusher tugs that Hargeaves operated on the Aire and Calder canal up to 2004. They pushed trains of 3 coal barges between a coal mine and a nearby power station.

I am looking for scale drawings of a tug and ideally one of the barges too – though I can probably derive a good approximation of the barges from photos.

Any help (or pointers to a book or magazine) would be much appreciated.

David can you give me more info on this subject as my mums madienn name was hargreaves and i was wondering about a possible conection ??

Hello David

Can’t find any plans for these little tugs but they should be quite easy to build form scratch as they are very boxy, how big do you want to make your model?

Meanwhile here are some photos that you might already have.

Is your mums family from the Leeds area? if so you might wish to research the family history and see if there is a connection.

Mums father,my grandfather,was from the coventry area and his father was an Iron master,????.When my granfathers mother died his father re married and my grandfather left home and joined the Royal Navy ,Queen Victorias navy !!!.He served under the Prince of Battenberg(Lord Louis Montbatten’s Father).

When Mountbatten visted the pensioners complex that my grandparents lived my grandfather said to him” I remember you as a snotty young middy(Midshpman) hiding behind your fathers tails ” needless to say mountbatten was quite shocked that he rememberd him and stopped and had a glass of whiskey with him.

Sadly we lost my grandfather at the good age of 100yr’s and 9 months.When he was interview for his 100th birthday by the local paper they askedwhat the secret to long life was and he replied clean living as he sat back and puffed on his pipe and sipped his whiskey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The following is an extract from wikipiedia and explains what an Ironmaster was;

An ironmaster is the manager – and usually owner – of a forge or blast furnace for the processing of iron. It is a term mainly associated with the period of the Industrial Revolution, especially in Great Britain.

The ironmaster was usually a large scale entrepreneur and thus an important member of a community. He would have a large country house or mansion as his residence. The organization of operations surrounding the smelting, refining and casting of iron was labour intensive, and so there would be a large number of workers reliant on the furnace works.

There were ironmasters (though possibly not called such) from the 17th century, but they became more prominent with the great expansion in the British iron industry during the Industrial Revolution.
