HI I am new to this model boat building and like so many others am unsure of what to do.

I have purchased a set of plans for a bait boat from http://www.alwayshobbies.com/Store/Model-Boats/Radio-Control-Boats/Kingfisher-$9–Angler’s-Baiter

and it is supposed to be made of wood. However I was just wondering how difficult it would be to make it from plastic sheets. I have slightly modified the plans but don’t like the idea of wood as I believe the finished boat will be too heavy for my needs.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

      Thanks.

If you do not have experience of building model boats or related items then I suggest you stick to the plans you have spent money on.

David, The reply above holds some serious merit, and I might suggest that you have a go using wood (I take it they mean plywood) as suggested in the plans. The plans were drawn up with wood in mind and I would (pun) have thought that the finished article will be more than satisfactory. I have built several boats from very common or garden materials, 4mm ply, Hardboard etc and they were all fit for purpose, and none of them was very heavy. Lets face it, most boats need ballast of some sort or another, so building a super light hull sometimes is a bit self defeating. Hobbies must have sold thousands of those plans over the years. Get stuck in, follow the plans and there will not be a problem. Ashley

A thought has just struck me,  Hobbies have been producing plans for donkeys years and it may be that indeen they do say "wood, 1/4" " or whatever, but of course plywood is the stuff to use now. It was expensive when some of these things were first drawn up  ????? Ashley

they make boats from concrete, dont they. Canoes even !
