Hello. I am restoring a 1977ish  1/24th scale ‘Heritage’ fishing boat kit. Can anyone suggest a  way of replicating fishing nets at that scale.

The kit had hair nets which looked quite good but ‘hair net technology’ has moved on and the modern Asda version just looks like, well, hair!.

      Thanks, Alan.

          Hi Mick,

there is a company with a shop in Fleetwood Called Fleetwood Trawler Supply who trade in the shop as "The Yacht Shop", 1 Station Road Fleetwood, FY7 6NW, Tel: 01253 879238 and if you search on the net for http://www.ybw.com they sell proper Shrimp fishing net.

It has a mesh of about 3/16 to a 1/4 inch guage and is tar impregnated for long lasting, and is properly tied from hemp.( not moulded plastic)

It is so fine because of the nature that it is used, but nowadays with little shrimping going on in the old traditional way in Morecambe Bay they sell it in a packet with old shells and sometimes a plastic crab or Star fish for ornamentation.

But it is the real macoy and I use it on my model trawlers at 1:32 scale.Even smells right being tar impregnated.

The last time I bought a bag of it ( about 2 metres square) it was £3.75 a bag.

          Hope this helps, neil.

Forgot to add, it comes in a deep brown colour similar to what "old" fishing nets came in, not the more modern synthetic greens and oranges.

heard nothing more about it.Mick.I think they have their hands full with the (literally) thousands of fleetwood residents that are complaining on a daily basis about the absolutely foul oderous smells that waft over fleetwood all the time from United Utilities ess aight one tee farm that polutes the atmosphere on a grand scale!!

                  hiya neil

united utilities have just spent a fortune capping the tanks in southport  to stop the smell to the

surrounding area  because of the complaints they make me sick keep up the pressure

Just to get back to the fishing net enquiry!!, thanks again Mick but Fleetwood Trawler Supplies have discontinued  stocking the shrimp netting, so the search goes on.

Looks like its fishnet stockings for me!.

I found a suitable material for 1:24 – 1:32 scale fishing boat nets.

It’s called tulle, is available ready-coloured in most colours needed such as green, blue, orange etc and (I think!) is made from nylon.

I ordered a small piece (100cm x 137cm) from a seller on ebay that I can highly recommend. It cost 99p +55p postage and was delivered within 2 days of ordering.

Here’s a link to the sellers ebay shop for future reference:

For fishing nets try scaffold debris netting.

When I bought some oranges in a net bag from the supermarket I was thinking that it was the right colour, orange, and size for a fishing net?  Likely it would need to be ‘dirtied’ for a model.
