Hi, Has anyone any advice regarding painting over brass. Does the brass have to be treated first, if so, with what? What is the best paint to use after that? Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou

        Hi Ray

It depends on where the brass is(e.g. underwater/outside/indoors) and how big an area the brass covers.

        All the best

        Paul

Hi Paul, I am building a model sailing barge, and some of the fittings that I will need often are only supplied in brass which does not exactly match with the type of fitting found on these craft. I am thinking more of deck fittings which will not necessarily be under water(unless it sinks) . Ray

            Hi Ray

Before painting give the brass a quick rub down with wire wool to give the paint a key then wash the parts with soapy water to remove any grease. After this hold the parts with tweezers to prevent the grease from your hands from going on them whilst you rinse them off then dry with clean cloth. You should then apply one coat of metal primer within half an hour.

Sounds a bit complex but it does work.

            All the best

            Paul

I use after a clean with soap etc…

Chromate Wash primer(if possible) two fine layers in interval descript in the wash can. i think 5 minutes.

So  after dry in the specified time

i use a sintetic primer surfacer fast grey(lazzulac of Lazzuril – Sherwin Willians) after wash primer and left dry.

                      A warning:

is fundamental paint with primer surfacer after the exactly time for wash primer.

if you don’t respect this time and your primer surfacer coat is more  than this time

a new coating of wash primer is necessary cause the adrency of wash prime is lost.

But if you respect this time the preparation for metal painting is as success.

Maibe be painting in a warm day if possible(in the case of Wash primer) in the case of primer surfacer any time.

I was just going to echo Neils sentiments. Virtually everyone uses brass prop tubes.. and how many poeple bother to carry out these surgical painting methods?? I dont and I have never had a problem.

Theoretically aluminium DOES need an etch primer or something, and galvanised finishes also need a special primer for adhesion, but brass?? I dont think so.   Ashley

NB so saying, a rub down with steel wool to key the surface would obviously help, but this would apply to any shiny/smooth surface.

It’s O.K slapping it on "an’ ‘opin for the best", trouble is it don’t stick very well. If it’s in a position where it might get knocked (even lightly) it will just chip off, and keep the masking tape away from it. I’ve read that etch priming is esential — ask the Locomotive boys. I’ve had good results with etch primer from Pheonix Precision Paints, they do a one pack or a two pack kit, though there are other suppliers.

I have read all the above ,however iam told that if i clean up the brass and soldered joints on my gantry and then varnish it prior to priming with h***fords primer  the paint will adhere correctly. is a good idea saving using etch primer etc ?
