I recently purchased a delightful plank on frame schooner from eBay. The seller included a drawing of the sails which had a telephone number on it which I phoned. To my surprise I was speaking to Rob Abell who is very active on this site. He told me how he had made the yacht in 2004. from drawings in a book by Thomas Darling.

Amazon books came up trumps with a copy at £40 + pp. However Rob has very kindly sent me his copy FOC which cost him nearly £4 to post. He would not accept any payment — so this posting is just to say thank you.

I hope to make cotton replacement sails for this beautiful yacht and will post photos as and when.

          Hello Norman

Just read your post…..Many thanks for doing so and I hope you enjoy the book

I'm only too pleased to see the book is going to a good home where it will provide good service

The plastic sails were a disappointment and the cotton sails you propose, will enhance the appearance enormously

All the best, Norman….Post a few pictures when you are ready

          Bob

Norman two things to think on.

            1. pin all hatches shut whilst sailing.

            2. Cotton sails have high surface tension when wet.

I had my Emma C Berry get hit by a squall that laid her flat on the water surface tension kept her there as I watched hatch covers float away and she quickly filled with water and sank with top of main mast visible in wave troughs 100m from shore in the middle of winter was crook for months afterwards.
