I am more than halfway through my first build and have a problem of my own making, the hull flexes about a mm between bulheads. The plans required 3mm depron but I was not confident bending around sharp curves so I had the brilliant (not) idea of using 1.5mm.

Have tried to stiffen it with 3 layers of frostguard and about 10 coats of Eze Kote resin to no avail. I cannot increase the thickness of the hull by an appreciable amount.Cant access the inside enough to carry out work

      help please

Is the deck on? That should stiffen the whole structure.
What is the model you are building?

I think Charles is right. Tubes are much stiffer in torsion than an open structure is. If that doesn't work then I'd suggest trashing the thing and starting again with the recommended material. That way you won't waste any more of anything.

As someone who has designed model aeroplanes and boats I would always recommend following the instructions. The bloke who designed the thing might appear to you to be a total idiot, but he's built at least one more of them than you have.

Your options are either to add rigidity inside (but you don't have access) or outside, by putting on another layer of 1.5mm Depron, cut a bit oversize.

It is a standard technique to create sharp curves by building them in two or three layers of easily-bent material, so you might have planned to do the 3mm as two layers of 1.5mm. I'm not sure why you 'can't increase the thickness of the hull' by adding to the outside – could you tell us?

Thanks everyone for for your comments.

The only reason for not adding an extra layer on the outside was that I was not sure of getting full contact around the curves but I will do as you suggest. Nice to know that this is something do as a matter of course.

Dave M, So far I have broken Strings (2No) and a bulhead through being heavy handed and did not want a repeat fixing the hull, as I said "was not confident bending around sharp curves" and nothing to do with the designer.

                Thanks all

I was not sure of getting full contact around the curves…

I've not worked in Depron before, but I suspect that a contact adhesive would solve that particular problem…
