Evening guys, im part way through building 1/48th scratch built ton class mine sweeper, wondered what colour you guys would recommend for the grey on the hull and top structures.

Andrew. Warship grey seems to be a bit of a subjective thing, in that if you were to compare 10 pictures of the same ship taken at different times they will all look to be a different grey. There may be a "dulux" colour mix spec that RN ships are painted, but this not neccessarily the best colour to do a working boat.

I made a Titanic a while ago and there was considerable opinion "out there" as to what colours were best, and even using different colours at different scales !!

We have had this same question as a post some time ago and I think the outcome was, choose a grey you are happy with, easy as that.

Hi Andrew,

I'm fully with Ashley on this one, any grey will do, I've seen and used the undercoat spray grey and just sealed that with a matt varnish. I've even used two coats of grey primer/undercoat as well for the under water hull on a tug. It's still on and water proof after 10 years.

The official colour is Battleship Grey but if you ever go into ships control room (RN ship that is) you will be reminded of that book Fifty Shades of Grey. One piece of equipment supplied by contractor X site between equipment supplied by contractor Y and Z and all three are a slightly different shade.

Andrew, i would suggest Halfords Grey primer, its very close to what we expect, Davids post about different contractors colours, the paint for the ship was different on each mix, so chose the one you like Ashley has it right, are you happy with it??? then do it

Hi Andrew just as a sort of PS to your paint topic , my late father served on a Ton class sweeper out of Malta it was HMS CROFTON sorry don't know the pennant number of hand but dad always said that they hailed a fishing boat , during the Cyprus gun running crisis, to heave to but the ship ignored their command so the skipper ordered the gun crew to put a round across the bows BUT they missed and put it through the wheelhouse instead !!!!!!!

Hi all i am building the ex matchbox flower class corvette and would like to know what colour for the deck i am torn between Tamiya Deck tan xf55 and revel mat 16 .

Any suggestions ????

You will often find that the same colour paint from the same manufacturer is often a slightly different colour when it comes from two different batches i.e has been manufactured at a different time. My son built himself a very nice Lotus 7 inspired sports car….from scratch and not from a kit. Although the chosen body colour was British Racing Green with a yellow stripe down the middle, he chose to paint the chassis etc Post Office Red using coach paint. Although he was advised by dad to "make sure you buy sufficient paint"….he didn't. A further quantity was purchased (different batch) and the difference in colour was clear to see. The remedy was to purchase a further quantity i.e enough to paint all of the metalwork at one go. Problem solved.
