        Hi

All I'm new to this forum and would like your advice. I'm planning to build a model of Captain Cook's Endeavour. My problem is which kit. I have experience of making one other model and feel I'm skilled enough to tackle any of the seven kits I've found on the net. The one that appeals most to me is made by Occre at a scale of 1:54, but this is based mainly on the picture of the completed kit. Has anyone experience of building a Crrra kit? The other six kits I found on the net are by Caldercraft, Mantua, Constructo, Artesania, Mamoli and Corel. The cost of these are less than the Occre kit. I really would like your thoughts on which kit I should go for, which ones I should avoid.

        Thanks Paul

Hello Paul and welcome to the forum.

I've not encountered OcCre before so took the opportunity to peruse their website you having mentioned it. Even at first glance I could see a couple of discrepancies on their finished model of Endeavour [brass chain on the anchor; anchor fluke boards wrong shape and colour].

In the world of kits there is a lot of choice and we all have our favourite suppliers. Tops for me, and I have seen this one currently under build by a colleague is the kit by Caldercraft. Another outstanding kit is from Victory Models, I've seen a finished Endeavour of theirs and it's really good, and not forgetting Euromodels of course, but they don't do an Endeavour (every one else does) and they specialise in uncommon vessels – but be warned – they are expensive but very well researched.

Artesania and the rest are good, but sometimes the quality of the wood supplied can be below par.

I've built from Caldercraft (good), Artesania (fair/good), Corel (poor) and Mantua (fair) and given a choice once I've cleared all my other projects would do Euromodels for its uniqueness or bite the plank and scratch build a 64.

Anyway, its a kit you want and unfortunately it's your choice at the end of the day. A good manufacturers description is given on the modelshipyard.com website where they compare them all for you. Good luck and please, once you've made a choice keep us informed of progress.

            Thanks Kimmo

For your knowledgeable insights into the Occre kit. Caldercraft was my first choice before seeing the Occre model, and following your comments, it's back as the front runner. As a side issue. I looked on Amazon for a copy of "Anatomy of the Ship, Endeavour". The cost for a second hand copy ………£440!!!!!

I will order the kit shortly and will post my progress, and no doubt seek further advice.

            Thanks again

            Paul

              Paul,

I was sure that price was a miss print, but looking around copies seem to be at hiked prices.

NOTE if you search using the ISBN 13 number you'll get at least two sites that offer free access to on line copies of the book, if not also offering you free download of it for your own use.

Also, this website http://www.bookkoob.co.uk/book/0851778968.htm has the book listed at £25 and available.

              Aye, Kim

                Hi Kim

I've ordered the book from Bookkoob for £25. Looked on Amazon and they are still listing second hand copies from 3 sellers at £423.84, £466.91 and £566.91. **LINK** Maybe I should have got a few copies and sold them on Amazon. I would have made enough to pay for the kit

Well it was all going well until I got the email saying the book is out of print and there are no plans for a re-print

Did manage to find a site that will sell access to a PDF copy of the book at 2 US Dollars a day. You cannot download it but you can print it or copy and paste each page as a picture into a word document.

Looks like the only way to get a hard copy is to shell-out £400+. Take note any of you who have a copy.

                  Paul

Not worth that sort of price!

You could try asking on the ModelBoatMayhem website, somebody there might have a copy they are willing to sell.

Otherwise just keep looking and one will pop up somewhere.

Have you thought of an inter-library loan? I've done this frequently (latest being the Raven/Jacobs 'British Battleships'. If it can be found locally the loan is free, if it's got to come from the British Library (you have to ask to extend the search there) it only cost about £5, and you can always photocopy the bits you want.

                        Excellent idea Ian.
