As you can see i have a Huntsmam,Huntress or Swordsman..Im still not sure. Anyway i know its a heavy boat but i really would like it to go a bit faster. At present it goes at a very quick walking pace. It has a 850 Torpedo motor in it and is run by a heavy 12v battery. Great running time but just to slow! Looking to spend no more than £100,is that viable?

At 4ft you could fit a petrol engine which would provide all the power that you need alternatively you could try one of these new fangled brushless electric motors.

Could you provide a few photos of the interior so that we can see the existing layout.

Jon. A Nimh battery pack will instantly provide more performance by virtue of halving the weight of battery. No other mods neccessary.

The Torpedo can be run at increased voltage for more oomph. Not done it myself but I think 18v will be ok (experts plse)

Both mods only involve a change or battery, and assuming your esc can handle a bit more power. The Nimh battery will deliver slightly more current than the SLA . An X50 prop should be fitted unless thats what you have.

OTHER than that a change of motor will be required and I am not qualified to suggest a suitable combination for a large boat such as yours. Others have the combinations you might require.

I would buy a 12V Nimh pack first, 5000mAh and see what you think on the increased performance before doing anything else!

The first thing to do is follow Colin Chapmans advice for improving performance "Add more lightness". Replacing the SLA with a similarlarly specified NiMH pack will do just that, and is an eonomical first step.

Unless the motor is a dud, changing it is an uncertain option. Recent experience with MFA motors has been a disapointment, replacement with a JR equivalent from Cornwall Models gave a much better motor. Probably the difference between MFA using bits of old iron and JR using actual magnets. The two motors certainly feel vastly different when turned by hand.

Ok thankyou, well i have lightened the hull by removing some bits and pieces not needed. As mentioned by Paul T i have included some pics. Like i said earlier,its running a 850 Torpedo Motor,the reciever is a Planet R6m 6gb micro reciever and the speed contol is a Marine brushless. Im not looking for mega speed for the boat,but would be nice to get maybe 10-15 mph.. Now looking forward to taking it for a spin this evening at Eaton Park.

I agree with all that has been said regarding NIMH batteries and the 850 motor. 10-15mph is actually quite fast I think, and would certainly see the boat planing well. I'm not a fan of 850 motors either, but they do perk up if you increase the voltage to say 14.4volts, but it may involve another esc. In my experience, Nimh batteries are limited in the current they can deliver and Lipos will give everything a motor asks for- but you will certainly notice a difference losing the lead acid battery and replacing with Nimh to start with. I think it's worth looking for an ESC that can cope with more than 12v for just this reason- it gives you a bit more flexibility.. I like Electronize 30amp controllers, always found them 100% reliable.

Just been searching for a 12v 5000 nimh battery pack. Have came across one on ebay…called a Vapextech.. Capacity 5000 ah, Weight 725g Measured at 100ma (0.2c) dishcarge. Max discharge 30amp Max charge current 5000ma £41.95 Will this do the job?

Sounds OK. I would also consider a pair of these – **LINK**

Two 6v and the right Y lead gives 12v with vastly increased flexibility of just where and how you mount them. If you can move the batteries around a bit, you have the opportunity to lose any trimming ballast that might otherwise be needed.
