Could it be to tie off the halyard for that pennant thats flying to warn other ships that there’s a mine loose in the area before its blown up ??

      Dad never mentioned it !

        Hello Ducky Boy

Got some facts off YouTube……………..they didn`t intentionally explode the mines……it was far too dangerous and lost a few ships in the process.

They used rifle fire simply to puncture the casing and allow the mine to sink!

Now get this!……………..I`m thinking of putting operational paravanes on JD!

With a big diameter drum inside the hull…..remote control of course!

I could lift the vanes off the deck……allow them to swing out……..unwind the drum and the vanes will fan out in a most exciting manner…….what yer think?….eh?

I`ll bet the idea excites our ideas man …….Paul!………eh?

Bob….How do I do it for the money?

That would be good at Bury, Bob but not very practical at Etherow with the depth of water there ???

There again you could dredge up some boats that have sunk over the years.

My Paravanes will simply bob along the surface attracting great crowds of club members and multitudes of Etherow onlookers and a few ducks………………Can`t wait!……………Should be great fun patrolling the waters!………………….I could even use it as a rescue boat!……………making The Teal Recovery Service ….redundant!

            Bob……..how does he do it?

This is it!……………..Two cranes with the paravanes…….(is that the correct name?)……trailing astern….whistling thru water……..little red flags on top…….splendid!

              Can`t wait Bob

                Nice idea Bob

But it will require a lot of servo control to make the cranes slew out then lower the floats into the water and the extra equipment will take up quite a bit of space in the hull.

However you could manufacture the crane mounts out of tube and pass the hoist wire through the mount and onto the jib, this way the crane could slew without twisting the wire, the cranes could be made to slew with heavy duty servos and the hoist drum is easy to operate with a motor and speed controller.

So if you do have the space then the engineering is quite simple.

I knew you would like of the idea….. Paul!

I envisage a line from the paravane…..up to the eye of the half moon shaped thingy……then to a non swivelling crane…through a few pulley blocks…and disappear into the hull somewhere…to a sail servo with large disc…………….3.5 revs at 7 inches diameter wiil give about 22  inches of wind-in

The paravanes will rest on the deck and will swing over the water when winched upwards, because the cranes are already swung out…………and descend into the water when the line is let out…………..simple

…but a swinging crane would be nice!
