A couple of previous posts I’ve made about Margoletta have been in the Ezi Kote thread but I thought it better to start a new one for any more questions which I’m sure will crop up as this is the first model of this type & construction that I’ve done. I’ve made a start, we’ll see how we go on. It needs to be done for Christmas.

So the first question is really for Ray, the designer. What scale is Margoletta? I cant find any info on the plan or article and I’ve no experience of Broads cruisers, what was a typical length for this type of boat and I can work it out.

      Thanks

      Stephen

        Hi Stephen,

Sorry I missed your post, I’d say 32 – 35 feet length is what I had in mind, artistic licence as she is freelance 🙂

I have started a while back Herbert Woods Delight at 1/12th scale which I had a holiday on a couple of years ago, I must get back on it soon, just finishing the Slipper launch.

        Regards Ray

          Hi Ray

Thanks very much for your reply. At 32ft long, Margoletta at 24″ that would be a scale of 1/16th. I’ll keep a lookout for some suitable figures & a record player!!! I cant remember how many there were on Margoletta in Coot Club, can you?

I’ve cut out all the hull frames and keel and now doing the fine adjustments to fit them all together, prop shaft in the keel so making progress. Working with my favourite material – wood.

At 1:16 scale check out the Bruder posable farm figures. I have used these in  my Fairey power boats and Greek Fishing Boat. You can easily repaint then in alternative colours.

                She’s finished!!

I’ve really enjoyed this build, its the first time I’ve done a real scratch build. The first I did was a wooden narrowboat kit, the second a lifeboat kit, the third a puffer, scratch built on a grp hull so this was completely different.

Grandson, for who it was built as he is a big Swallows & Amazon fan, was chuffed to bits on his 14th birthday yesterday, lets hope he keeps his interest in modelling, we’ve had some great fun and days out over the last few years.

I don’t remember where I first heard about Ray Woods 1st plan in Model Boats in June 2005 but thanks Ray, I really enjoyed it.

What next? I’m going to the other extreme, I’ve got a boat in a bottle I started probably 25 years ago, I’m going to finish that off I think.

I should think he was chuffed, a great present and you have made a lovely job of the build. Scratch building is more work but it is very satisfying.

Yes. To echo everyone else, very nice.

                      Well done Stephen,

The design for Margoletta has stood the test of time, and maybe my most popular being the first one that I produced, I hope your grandson enjoys playing boats like we do 🙂

                      Regards Ray

Very smart Stephen. I always enjoy building the hull as well as the upperworks, all my own work!

What a beautiful present and something he will always remember you by.  Hopefully it might tempt him into wanting to have a go himself.

Thanks everyone for all your positive comments. I certainly enjoyed the build and I’m now a big fan of Superphatic glue that I think it was Colin that recommended. I think I might send Margoletta in to “your models” in the magazine.

Yes, do that in ther My Models section. I’m sure the editor will welcome it.

Quite agree re Superphatic. I am currently making a lot of use of it in my Silver Mist build. It is an excellent alternative to superglue when you are working with wood and nicer to use.
