Morton’s titles and events (but not printing) have been bought by Kelsey Media who publish Ships Monthly among other magazines.

How this might Affect Model Boats we will have to wait and see.

Kelsey Media acquires Mortons Media – expanding & strengthening its position & capabilities in key markets

              Hi Colin,

It looks like the ME forum is live and kicking 🙂 compared to the MB’s one, I think this is because model engineering involves a very comprehensive workshop and serious investment ££££. I’m glad I have a foot in both camps 🙂 and fly RC aeroplanes 🙂

Yes, the ME forum is a lot more active but maybe vulnerable as a result as I have argued on the ME forum. People need to appreciate the viewpoint of the publishers in deciding on the value of forums and many members don’t seem to appreciate that. The success of the MyTimeMedia Military Modelling forum was instrumental in closing down the magazine and with it the forum itself.

Company funded forums are always very vulnerable to financial pressures and can be turned off at the drop of a hat.

MyTimeMedia wanted to close down the original Model Boats Forum and the managing director was only persuaded otherwise by Paul Freshney (then Editor) and myself.

Model Boat Mayhem is an independent forum and for the moment supported by voluntary donations which keep it that way. I support it because of that. The existence of internet forums is always very precarious.

And its not just the financial requirements for the forum subscription but the time and resources of an IT nature to simply look after the forum and protect it from various undesirable sources.  Again from the perspective of the owning organisation that is a resource that can be more productively employed elsewhere.

I must admit I was surprised at how naïve some of the comments were on the ME forum when I read it earlier. Some of the members there really seem to think they have a right to the forum without really understanding the basics of what they require to run.

I think forums in general have had their day as more and more turn to the various forms of anti-social media.  I agree with Colin’s comments that they don’t provide the archive that we value in a forum but we are a dying breed and the younger generations are a very much more disposable society.

Mmm, we were worried about the move to Mortons but having read the posts on ME I really think, unfortunately this time it could very well be the end, especially given the reduced activity on here.

Ironically forums like this are a very valuable resource for when writing articles!

                        Hi Chris,

My tablet and phone still about a week behind !! so no change there 🙁

A few years ago forums were seen as the way ahead and a bit trendy, not sure they are relevant anymore, I’m on quite a few Facebook groups .Maybe the faithful on this forum should form a WhatApp group to stay in touch with each other, Chantry club and my slope soaring buddies down here have them and they work well, saves a lot of travelling when the lake is iced over, or there’s no wind 🙂

It’s very noticeable that we don’t get many questions from beginners any more !!

                        Regards Ray

Strange, my Android tablet works fine now?

If it wasn’t for forums I doubt I would be building models boats now. This one and Mayhem were my main sources of gaining knowledge on how to build, techniques and RC equipment etc.and the interaction with members was and still is invaluable and maintains enthusiasm.

When you do a Google search many times posts are thrown up from these two forums and others with posts going back years. There’s some things I’ve found out and have done over the last couple of days I wouldn’t have known about otherwise.

I frequent a number of different Facebook groups for my various hobbies and interests but as already said they are a completely different animal and not suited to build blogs and research. And the other trouble is there are too many of them! They are so easy to set up that that the interest is watered down. Take model boats for instance. You have Mayhem FB which covers a quite broad church but then you have other groups for every sub-set you can think of which makes the whole thing disjointed and lessens cross-over between those interested in different aspects of the hobby. On forums I quite often read posts with regards to models that aren’t my particular area of interest. Some of these FB groups have very few members.

I do post the odd bit about my builds but they rarely attract much meaningful interaction apart from where did you get the plans and are soon gobbled up by other posts never to be seen again!

Ray, good idea about the WhatsApp group. I have emails for some on here but not all and it would be good to keep in contact as not many use Mayhem as well.

It’s interesting that Kelsey Media publish Ships Monthly.  It’s the only nautical magazine stocked at my local Sainsburys and can be hard to find amongst all the magazines about model railways.  Perhaps we just might see MB and ME on newsagents shelves again.

                                Hi Len,

I think I heard once Railway Modelling is a really big hobby, second only in numbers to fishing 🙂

Also the only regular stockist’s of our sort of magazines is WH Smith’s where I buy mine, there are also rumours of them closing some stores !! which would’nt be good at all 🙁

It isn’t a rumour Ray, WHS are closing 17 stores this year – Google W H Smith closures for full list.

Ray,  As you say Railway Modelling is extremely popular and there is big money involved however only last year one of the biggest vendors, Hattons in Warrington, ceased trading and one of the biggest shows was cancelled last year.  Craft based hobbies in general, across the board are in a slow but noticeable decline.

On a similar note I looked into selling on a couple of my old motorcycles, which were bought at a time when they were considered a sound investment.  One is a 1954 triumph and one is a 1930 Royal Enfield, both in perfect condition.  Most dealers now will not buy them off you, they will only consider selling them on your behalf and taking a cut, or they state they are not interested.  If I was to sell them I would get a good bit less than I paid for them so we are seeing similar effects in other engineering based hobbies.

As for magazines we used to have two newsagents in my local village, both as a part of a general store.  One has changed hands and dramatically reduced the newsagent section and the other closed completely.  So now it is not possible to buy many hobby based magazines in our village.

Yes, I’ve had similar experiences with vehicles. Part of my mothers estate was a 1927 Austin 7 Chummy which I used to drive in the 1970s which despite being 98 years old wasn’t worth that much. Also my 1962 Lambretta TV 175 which were going for significant sums only a few years ago have dropped in value. Trouble is they have now reached an age where potential buyers have drastically reduced and younger enthusiasts are looking at classics that were everyday cars when we were young!

Yes the bottom has fallen out of the vintage car market and older Dinky toys !!

But if you have an Escort Mk 1 , Cortina or Granada they are really sort after and go for big money, as nostalgia is now becoming quite modern 🙂

My first car being a Bond Bug now go for circa £10k

I have just done a report on the Midhurst Model show for the magazine, should be out in the next issue. Lindsey has used most of my photos but there wasn’t space for the wonderful model railway ‘Rainbow Rock’ diorama although she did find room for a small close up of it with a boat.

It is quite amazing! Edible rock is quarried and brought by whimsical little trains to be turned into confectionery.

I have been attempting to stimulate some interest on the Model Engineer forum see:

                                                https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/topic/kelsey-media-buys-mortons-titles/page/2/#post-787508

and earlier posts but there does seem to be a different mindset over there and it doesn’t seem to have occurred to anyone how you can have a situation where the magazine is published by one company and the forum is on another’s website especially after all the problems Mortons have had setting up and maintaining the WordPress versions.

I have not been able to find any mention of the sale on the Model Flying forum at all. This uses Invision software.

I have noted the suggestions in earlier posts concerning Whats App and Facebook but what do these offer in place of the current forum in terms of sharing build information and helping out with questions etc.? Surely the best bet if this forum is shut down is to go to Mayhem. Activity there has fallen off a lot since Covid so maybe it is a case of hang together or hang separately!  I don’t think trying to set up a new forum will fly anyway – we don’t have the expertise or resources and where would we get enough members?

Best to think about this now as there may be little time to act if the decision goes against maintaining the current three forums.

My suggestion of a WhatApp group was to keep in touch with the dozen or so forum friends I’ve made over the last 10 years on here. The facebook groups I belong too are world wide and are quite interesting I find.

I think the forum has had it’s day in reality which is sad, that some of the old hands ie Lifeboat Neil only use Facebook these days.

                                                    Ray,

I have no problem with Whats App and it certainly helps people keep in touch. Perhaps we should all send out our phone numbers by private message while we can unless we already have email links.

Neil seems to still be busy enough posting on the main Mayhem site though.

I don’t like Facebook as it seems to have no continuity. I only use it to try and keep tabs on matters affecting the semi private estate I live in. Unfortunately items of interest just seem to submerge if not constantly updated and can be difficult to locate and interpret with all the levels of who is replying to who. It is an abomination that just seems to exist in the present.

As regards a WhatsApp group I suppose it needs to be done sooner rather than later as we probably won’t get much notice if, as is likely, the plug gets pulled.
