City Of Oporto, scratchbuilt by Swan Hunter.

Not as attractive but a surprisingly good ship in a heavy swell for a small coaster and it paid my wages for around a year.

Her claim to fame was that she was fitted with one of the last ever Doxford engines. A medium speed three cylinder Doxford, which was quite captivating to watch!

This was my last coaster, the collier Wandsworth, in 1962 – I was paid £11 a week, and felt quite well off – the old MN suited me fine. These days I could not even have gone to sea – no O levels, and not all that good academically – Wandsworth
