      Hi Ashley

Nice to hear the Fantome back in the water/ice.

The Sla battery did the job.

      Great camera boat.

Needed some cannons to finish off the deck clutter on the Gull. Couldn’t find any the right size to buy so bit the bullet and spent an afternoon on my old Myford lathe and voila! Two cannons.

Spent last night making the trucks just need to fit axles and wheels now.

          Hi all,

Been busy fettling my cannons for the Gull, trucks are stained dark oak and I made the wheels by drilling a piece of walnut rod in the lathe then parting off 8 wheels with a fine tooth saw.

I’m well chuffed how they turned out, just waiting for some rope tackle blocks to come in the post then I can mount them on deck.

          Pics in album.

Nice one Richard. You will need some more crew members now!

Only modelling activity this week has been finishing hull paint on Devastation and making the mast on the German LFM detachable. Means that the thing will sit on the shelf with the stern superstructure attached, thus keeping out dust and insects (and mice). Devastation looks really nice now what with the new deck varnish. One of my favourites despite not being particularly scale. It is relatively small and “easy to use”, the batteries lasting ages due to it only having two 385 motors.

Jobs for immediate future will be making proper ply boxes for the three small LCM and deciding where to put the Fantome back on the shelf. Also purchased some more cylinder beads for the big L, more buckets and I hope barrels for the larger beads (I say larger, the bigger ones are 11mm tall).

Found inspiration for project D unusually in a picture at Kingston hospital where I had to take mum (three times this week). The craft in question, The H2O restaurant boat has all the features I need, and as a bonus it looks like for the side windows I will be able to use dolls house items from Hobbies. Obviously the rear will need modification but the rest is just about spot-on.

It’s still v windy here. May be that a more sea worthy craft will be needed on Sunday.

Poles – A member brought his 10 Metre fishing pole down to the lake a while back. It was noted that while it was too cumbersome to be safely used, either for the model or anybody or anything within reach, it was too short to be much use But then again, Fairhaven is a big lake.

I expect the same would be true of a 40 foot barge pole, being a menace to anything within 12 yards of the wielder, but a 10 foot one is a handy size for working with, poling off the bank and suchlike.

Ah Malcolm. You are right, a 10m pole is a bit clumsy but does give a good reach considering you still need 1 or 1.5m of it to hold. My 7m pole was consistently JUST too short but it only had perhaps 5.5m of useable reach. I keep both in the car now to cover all bases. A small weight on the end of a ball of string is effective for longer distances?

An expensive carbon 10m pole would probably be good, but ruinously expensive. It’s a good trick, mind you, holding the pole upright and un-telescoping it…it goes upwards for ever!

Decided to take the small T22 tomorrow, the box lid of which is a poor fitand there is evidence of a mouse dropping inside (nothing else, no damage) so have made another. Bits inside allowing glue to dry.

                  Hi Ashley

A weighted length of string or fishing line has served me well on my numerous canal side 'accidents'.

Talking of carbon poles I once witnessed a canal bank fisherman vertically extend his rod to full height …….right under some low level 11,000 volt power lines….BANG…needless to say that a new rod was the least of his worries.

Unbelievable coldness at pond this morning by the new owner of Hornet was happy with it.

Lifeboat was ok until one motor packed up. Looks a bit melted. Maybe a 385 would be better than a 280? Happier at 7.2 all the time what with it being driven hard by and 8 year old!

Weight is the issue regarding a 385' and it would be slow on a 7.2 stick with the small props.

A speed 280 should be on on 7.2v. Never had probs before….

Bit nippy. Fantome going well but a bit slow on 9.6v. I think I will get a 20v capable esc and gang two batts together for 14.4v, that should be better, and not too much current drain.

Instead of linking two batteries together for just 14v you could build your own out of sub C cells and get upto 19.2v. It works for me.

What if I offset the motor weight with a lipo stick?

Don’t have a lot of luck with motors, I remember melting a 380 in another boat last year.

I will let you into a secret, the port side motor also melted too in a bath test last week, so it’s either me or summing else. I had a spare armature so I whacked it in and it was ok.

Hornet was awesome though. Very big difference between a Nimh and lipo stick though. Interesting that.

How much prop was it trying to drive? That kind of damage is sually a sign of the motor being overloaded at the voltage its being run on.

15mm or so 3 blade. Propshaft felt tight on top bearing so maybe that was it.

                                Ordered another 280!

They are 20mm props, Cast brass 3 blade, From prop shop. I never had an issue with the motor/prop combination before, and I didn’t hang about! We could try the wattmeter on the boat with one motor connected to see if there is an issue? I have couple other boats with speed 280, no probs at all.

Noel, shout if you want to borrow wattmeter for home testing .

Hornet going very well. Shows you what a light boat and “standard” 540 can go like.

Peters jet boat also going best ever after removing some of the cabin superstructure. Was quite windy, so likely a bit more speed to be had on a flat day.

Paul, yes that’s an idea but I would have a battery then only used for one boat, whereas I have the requisite number of 7.2 sticks. From experience, the boat goes adequately fast on a 12v Niamh, so 14v should be ok.

The top bearing on the propshaft of the melted motor was very tight. Dunno why – perhaps it overheated?

I had put a drop of light oil on it, but didn't overdo it as the couplings were grub screwed on.

I have run a file up the bearing and now it turns freely. Filed a flat onto the end of the propshafts so now the couplings attach much more positively without stressing the plastic collars. Means I can be more liberal with oil now.

Look forward to that Noel. Decided on replacement motors?

A small parcel arrived bearing 200 plain wood “buckets” and 25 dark wood “barrels” for the London. Spent 30 mins with tweezers and superglu and the deck is now looking decently untidy. A couple of poses of builders have found alternative placing with the barrels and look good. There are now some 140 separate items on deck (excluding the masts and gratings) so I am getting there.

Hooked up the rudder but unhappy with the servo/tiller geometry. Undecided what to do just yet, something to ponder.

I have also decided to get rid of my Playmobile pirate ship and similar sized Disney Peter Pan pirate ship. Berengar used to play with the playmobile one, it is a surprisingly good model and my pirate/Nelsons navy 1/32 scale figures look very good on it. Taking up space and gathering dust. Hopefully the Mrs can sell them locally on Facebook (as usual, all reasonable offers refused) collection only.

Another order on our fave auction site are several types of cocktail stick flags! Not to be dismissed for use on certain model types and easily added to with a fine felt pen or biro.

                                          Hi all,

Two cannons have been fitted to the Gull and look the part (see album) then I noticed the foredeck looked a bit empty, so after a quick Google search I found some pictures and drawings of a cannonade, perfect!

Back to my trusty Myford and turned out nice chunky cannonade out of brass. Even after drilling out the barrel as much as poss it was very heavy, so plan B.

Dug out my saucepan of latex and made a mould using the brass cannonade barrel, then using the mould I now have two very light resin barrels (see album) just need to make the swivel trucks and fittings. Should add something different to my deck clutter.

Just for information, the Victory has the same cannonade’s. Sorry,That sounded like a bit of name dropping then!

The Seahawk as re-motored a while back with a 2kva plus in-runner (can’t remember exactly) from the defunct KM Ecranoplan so I could use a 6-cell Nimh for adequate speed, replacing the MFA 850, which, While adequately fast, needed 12v and I no longer have a 12v batt

A 24v capable esc has been spotted and a series battery connecting lead similarly ordered so the Fantome can fully realise the power of the mighty 800 engines.

Lovely morning at the pond. Titanic looked stunning in the sun, against a gently rippling blue sea, ahh.

sea ‘awk went well on 7.2 nimh battery. Wattmeter said 13A but the blue lights started flashing indicating low voltage so possibly it may have been taking slightly more. Tried it with Peters 2s Lipo and it was a touch faster, and then a 3s and faster still although we were expecting more. Perhaps on the 3s a change of prop may have been required?

oddly Peter had a glitch with the gentleman’s cruiser, at seemed to get stuck in reverse full throttle despite the transmitter having been turned off?.

Trevors fire boat going well after a programming? Issue! But the big sucker was leaking and was grounded pending the application of more goo.

Rear prop shaft bearing on sea ‘awk came out the tube,,,needs glueing back in, I may try loctite . Didn’t seem to affect running (it has a Graupner out-drive fitted)
