      Nope, third tin needed.

Wiped the first tin/ coats over with 1500 wet n dry, and used most of the second tin up, but it doesn't seem to be giving the sort of gloss I want.

If I have to t cut it I don't want to rub through so another couple of coats are required.

Turtle wax colour magic is good for adding shine and extra colour however once you wax paint it's almost impossible to properly remove it on a model in order to respray or touch up.

Update. Despite having a very late…morning…Saturday night (last week end) I struggled out to boating with a heavy aircraft carrier to find the pond weeded up. The wind was blowing our way and bringing weed with it, so didn't get to sail. we had a chat instead although Noel risked a sail and boat over the far side.

Following as I do defence matters, the DSEI 2023 event is on in London (last week I think)? And its the big showcase for news and new stuff.

Of interest are all the ship models on the various company stands. These are usually of a decent size, and remarkable for the incredible finish they achieve. Even in close up, the finish and detail is as good as it gets, it's truly amazing. Ok, they are not super detail models, but it shows how good professional model makers are.

We had a couple of chaps who came along a while ago from a professional firm and their work was very good indeed. Having a big space, all the equipment you need, materials to hand…sigh. one can only dream.

Next Ashley article to appear will be very large resto job, and one with a bit of a secret, BUT scheduled in after that should be something which no doubt may attract some negative comment from some who only want to see detailed boat builds …and nothing but, in the mag. Saying no more, but when fully populated I think it looks really good..

Actually, if published in the suggested order and not appearing until likely end of next year is something really WILL put the cat among the pigeons, I can't wait.

You are going to have to wait on this I am afraid. The first is a simple thing and not a great feat of detailed modelling, its just `nice`, the second….well, having seen it, you may wish you hadn`t.

Absolutely no pictures (unless you pm me)

Just as I have bought another tin to spray the flying bus, the weather has changed to cool(er) damp and blowy.

Some figures I have stuck on a top I am undecided about as they are a touch big at 1/100th, but 1/150 are deffo too small. To the onlooker who does not know what the ship is, and I am willing to bet no one on the forum will know, it’s a bit obscure even being RN, the larger figures would look ok, simply making the boat too small for what it’s supposed to be, however the small figures would look too small and make some of ships features appear oversize.

I need an obscure 1/125 scale really. The boat is of course a top to fit on one of my General Purpose hulls and as such the dimensions have had to be “adjusted” to fit it on, and this compromise is the issue with the figures.

I had planned to make aVictorian warship top of ‘the usual’ style, but this popped up, and Its such an interesting vessel that it needed to be modelled, and if published, a lot of the blurb will be about the development of weapons and ships of the time, and to me, the interest comes from these features that I have tried to include, rather than the the exactness of the scale. I hope it will be one of those things that once you know the why and wherefore, you see past the incongruities and appreciate what they were trying to achieve.

…..but so saying I have splodged some paint on the bus and am calling it a wrap! It’s not super glossy but it’s shiny enough and I will leave it as it is. Propellors have been unmasked. Let to harden for a few days.

Have to decide how to stick on the window strips. Spray adhesive on the back of the strip, or contact adhesive?. Hmmm

Gorilla dst it has been. It is certainly super strong.

I DID TRY impact adhesive but the acrylic paint softened. They call it acrylic, but it's nothing like a brushing acrylic.

In retrospect0 I wish I had glued the painted windows on, masked them and sprayed the boat, in that order. Cest ka vie! Jobs done now and it's OK. Painting windows on cabin now.

sunday nice, gp hull with monitor then canal boat tops.

I see current forum closes on Friday, reopens 12th….oo er…

                            ..and here we are!

Flying bus tested in its final form and thankfully the cut down props, cowls and boxed in motors have reduced the performance so I can use a 3s in safety. Further more I have changed the receiver to a new Planet one, and I can use the limit switch on the throttle channel so I can go either just fast. Or bl**DY fast.

We have had an interesting weekend in not so sunny Derbyshire. The local river overflowed on Saturday morning. Whilst building a small dam to protect the front of the house the sneaky water came in round the back and dumped 9″ in the garden which meant nearly 3″ in my cabin where most of my boats stored.

Got up this morning to find no water in the garden but a very wet cabin and wet boat boxes.

So we have been busy today drying out the cabin and boxes and trying to clear up the mess in the garden. We have been here 51 years and the worst flooding we have seen. On Saturday everyone was out in the street helping each other to protect their homes.

Hope this is a fixable glitch as I don’t want to have to fire up laptop every time.

Not tried it using the old mini ipad2 yet.

Problem not the boxes really. They are varnished inside and out. Its the foam padding to cushion the bow and stern, it doesn’t seem to want to dry this weather. So I have started ripping it out and putting new in to save time. As I get older I realise that my bigger boats are getting harder to lift! I have 6 boats in boxes on the Dining room waiting to go back in the workshop

It’s been suggested that perhaps I should sell the bigger heavier ones but who would want them!

Back to cleaning the workshop floor so I can clear the dining room.

I am a number, not a free man it seems….@ashleyneedham6918   or is it 88, as there is a random 8 underneath the 6918 under my grey avatar!

Tim. Not good for drying or painting at the moment. MOST of the boat supports in  my boxes are wooden slats with 1/4 inch foam stuck on top. SOME have a plasticky sort of foam which is waterproof.

I am going to make a new vehicle deck and rear superstructure for the ferry, as these items just sit in pace, and I am going to make this a Train ferry deck, using two strips of my nicely re-plated O gauge Hornby track and populate it with some of my tin plate trains.

Although two bits of track (11 inches long) sit side by side ok, a hitherto unseen issue has arisen in that most of the locos have either the winding key permanently attached. or have the spindle sticking out, preventing two trains actually sitting side by side in the available room. This limits what i can use, despite having 50 odd engines. Unbelievable, eh??   Still, there are half a dozen candidates so its not all bad. Not all have tenders, so I might go with two trains, a tender on one, and a carriage for the other, for the variety.

The selection will be either Mettoy, Brimtoy or Chad valley, as the Hornby locos are at least twice as heavy, even for the smaller locos, this being due to them having decent size springs. Am I speaking double-Dutch here??

The Swordfish suffered a magnet failure leading to my pilot having his head trimmed by the EDF, fortunately without seemingly much damage toi the fan, so some repairs needed, and I will have the hatch secured by a small screw this time.

Some, but mostly not all the previous posts on Todays Boating were transferred over, not that it matters really.

I have chosen two locos, one tender and a carriage. Two lengths of my replated hornby track have had their sleepers painted black as per like they should be. It looks quite good on the new deck, which I think will be grey.

I now have to decide on a superstructure to replace the ferry one. Unfortunately its a sort of fat oblong and not a long boat shape which limits it a bit. There is of course a requirement to show people as well, to add interest. Hmm…tricky. Will have to do a bit of general ferry research. Ideas welcome.

A new hatch is needed for the swordfish and this time the driver will be offset, so sitting on the fet. He will still be thin, but have a polystyrene ball head. This does not matter as the body/head will be to one side of the EDF inlet.

                                        Hi Ashley,

I spent most of my childhood playing with the old Hornby O gauge tinplate railways at my grandads 🙂

My dad was posher he had Gauge 1 system same tinplate track and a Bing clockwork loco which I have only just sold, as I’m beginning a massive de-cluttering process to stop my girls throwing it all in the skip one day 🙂

I think I did Richard. Ferries that transported trains would have been much larger than my ferry purports to be, so it will be a bit tricky making something credible for the rear, however, it’s just a bit of fun.

The chosen locos are a bit of a mismatch and I may squeeze in a better second one by trimming the clockwork key spindle down a bit..JUST enough to allow it to fit on the rails. There is a generous amount protruding so it won’t affect the ability to use the loco in the future.

Picture, just taken, of the proposed loco…I have half a dozen of this type in different styles. They are very light as the body is thin and in one piece, but they look really great. The printing is just super.

Ok. Ferry locomotive deck done and looking good. Locos just fit side by side with about 4mm of key-shaft trimmed on the left one.

Undecided about stern.  The space is 6″ long by 5 1/2″ wide. I need to put some 43mm O guage figures on it, so was thinking of a central block with walkway round three sides and perhaps a full width bit on top with  either an old style wood or flat front, or a modern angled bridge? There’s not much room to play with.

Picture..bridge and twin funnels? Essentially I would be using the bridge and rear bit, not the bit in front of the bridge. Bearing in mind the size this is just a picture for the idea. Ashley

ALTHOUGH…having just put the picture in post, if you were to move the angled bridge to the front of the superstructure and then cut the ship in half at the end of the large windows you would essential.y have my ferry?

Going to go with a truncated version of the above ferry for the top. Painting figures now.

Swordfish, if you remember the driver came unstuck…I have a new driver in 3/8 ply and he will be blue/pink rather than black. He will be offset this time, and in the middle will be a very small repair patch and a screw to hold the top down for security.

Other jobs are to repaint the lid top and underside of the hms midge box (it got very wet in the rain, which would normally not be a problem but the underside of the hardboard top was not painted and it went  bit bendy.

The ferry needs a slight mod to re-site the small forward safety rail bits and make them integral with the top, otherwise when the passenger ferry top is removed, the rails will remain and get in the way of the new train ferry top.

It’s coming up to Christmas so the “Christmas ferry” box will have to be dug out in order to decorate the ferry appropriately.

                                                    Such is life. Ashley
