Bit of a disaster today (apart from the naff Santa hat look), as Peter bought along the wrong controller for his boat….and Tevors Skyfly transmitter was telling him to have all the switches down (they were) and wouldn't work!!

Luckily the Sunderland was ok, and the Ferry with Christmas decorations and lights also worked ok.

Below, and not giving much away…a view of the card model I always make before starting a project. the card models give me a 3d model for perspective, scale. visualising construction, access and any number of things. They get cut up and altered and sometimes roughly painted. Mainly in this case was….would a relatively simple model deliver the right look?? Bamboo masts and so on were used to gauge the sort of mast and yard lengths I might be looking at.

img_0442#yes really. card model used to check viability of project, mast lengths, likely overall look etc.jpg

Annoyingly it seems all I had to do to the transmitter to sort it out was to take it home !

Should hopefully be back next Sunday.

we moan about the weather here but generally it is just so-so, and that’s way we like it. Nothing extreme (but I want a bit of snow to photograph the ZiS against!

my brother lives in Oz, and they had several years of high temps and droughts! Not for me.

Last but one boating opportunity this Sunday. Has turned a bit mild, and no more band jobs so MAY try the Walrus if it is calm. Obviously the Xmas ferry will be turning out, and…..oooo….dont know. Even the London if nice.

Summary of last boating before Christmas.

Myself: BHA German biplane. Went well, no drama. Xmas ferry: Also went well and looke3d festive.

Peter: Fishing boat with numerous xmas attachments, lights, figures etc. RAF Rescue launch.

Noel (minus ankle biters). Re engined Ecranoplan. Spiffing performance on a tiny prop with new 2600Kv motor. Destroyer: Now with half decent superstructure, proper gun turrets and numerous accessories. Resembles a Cossack!

                                Trevor. Tug.

Richard. Pirate ship and Templar ship. Templar vessel showing signs of actually sailing, for the first time, due to a rudder extension. We thought an even larger rudder would do the trick, and then he could sort out the rear mast/sail.

Red hats de rigour, and festive stollen.

Impressed with Ecranoplan. mine has 3700Kv motor with similar sized but lower pitch prop (as this is all it will take given the high Kv) and it will be interesting to see the difference in speed, although the two are of slightly differing dimensions and weight. Mine is all balsa/ply and actually lighter then the ex-foam flyer, by a small amount.

Very nice morning sailing, thanks to Angela for the festive catering!

Woody looking the part with flashing lights and a Santa hat, as always the cheapest boat to make pulls the biggest crowd. Goes to prove we’re all kids at heart!

The Templar caravel actually started to sail with my recent boom control adjustments, it seems you have to treat lanteen sails like a swing rig but control the sail from the front and point it into wind. Now I have to get the rear sail to do the same, oh well, I’ve got the rest of winter to sort it out.

                                  Merry Christmas to all!

Good to get destroyer on water after many months, even though not finished. Its as close as I could get it to an L&M class in terms of armament and superstructure. Used pictures of Laforey in 1943 guise, so Cossack is very close!. Next step is fitment of the ships boats and some radar antenna.

Bigger rudder on Ekranoplan now in planning after the test with tape and card, which will hopefully bring turning circle down form yards to feet!

                                    Happy Christmas to all!

                                    Noel.

Tomorrow will have Ecranoplan, with a couple of smaller props to try. I realised a few weeks ago that all the experimenting I did when I built it were carried out with a 9.6V Nimh battery pack. Now I have a 3s Lipo to play with….unfortunately with such a high Kv motor (3700) only small props can be used. It was drawing 9A or so originally on the Nimh.

Noels was going very well on a 2600Kv motor and a small prop…..I have my eye on a 2700Kv motor, Inrunner, as it may be that the very high Kv is not allowing the motor to turn even the smaller props properly, whereas the additional torque of a 2600 unit makes up for the lower amount of revs??? We will see.

Xmas ferry as a last outing as second vessel. unless it looks nice out.

Pleasant boating today, only myself , Peter and Angela.

Ecranoplan running fine, on 3s was just as fast with a 4.5×4.1 prop as the 5.5×2… But not as fast at Noels with his new megawatt motor. Have ordered a JP EnErG 2700Kv Inrunner, 28mm. This will mean a bit of surgery but what the hell. Should make it dead nippy. Hobbies Hydro running also ok but somehow I have the wrong prop adaptor on it, probably swapped over from trying the 3 blade prop. This other adaptor moved the prop away from the funnel by a few mm. Today the prop was ALMOST touching the funnel, so I moved it back by about 2mm (all I could go) and unbelievably it was faster!!! Not by much but you could see it in the water coming off the bow.

I will have to get one of the long E-flite adaptors (as I have now discovered them) and this will allow probably 10 or 12mm movement away from the tower and should make a big difference in both speed and noise. It will also mean I can fit a pitchier prop. This is not possible at the moment due to the tight clearance. It will not make a difference to the torque reaction.

Peter had the 57 special (perhaps should be orange????) and green fishing boat out.

Surprisingly there was only one Christmas boat visiting the pond. A really disappointing slow small speedboat which I recon would have been out paced by a lander.
