Ive been reading in a couple of threads of wooden hulls being covered in nylon stockings or ladies tights, Could someone tell me the purpose of it. Also how is it done, Does it give extra strength to a wooden hull. I`m a newbie to all this and scratching my head a bit.

It is possible to use tights as a strengthening membrane when building a laminated wooden hull in the same way that glass cloth is used on full sized wooden laminate hulls.

Having built in elasticity the tights will naturally form themselves to the shape of the hull and providing a compatible adhesive is used they will form a very strong layer within any timber lamination.

The darker mesh on this diagram shows where glass cloth would be used on a full size hull, sandwiched between two layers of timber.

I should add that in model boat construction this method would successfully strengthen a weak wood like balsa and when used in a balsa laminate hull will provide significant resistance to penetrative impact and increased body rigidity.

As Paul says, tights have some advantages in being elastic as they conform to the shape of the hull and make it easier to get a smooth surface compared with applying layers of glass tissue which will require more rubbing down.

Possibly a good source of scale ladders too….

Thanks for your answers to my question regarding ladies tights, I was picturing them somehow being stretched over the hull, but it seems that what you said Paul is an excellent idea to use the tights in between laminate hull sheets. You learn something new every day, Thanks for all your input. I can try and give it a go instead of just using resin and glass as no more sanding back would be needed. Much easier sanding wood or Balsa
