Caldercraft Garnock engine sound options

Im currently building a Caldercraft Garnock Irvine Harbour Tug. I would like to fit an engine sound system and was hoping to get some advice on what would represent this particular model, also bearing in mind that the model is only 500mm long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the best sound system I ever had in a model  was in my old Talacre coaster  and was …… a bent prop shaft.

I’m going to upset David here – so I’ll apologise now – sorry,

Engine sound systems, realistic as they are, soon become very annoying and unrealistic to the user and others around the lake.  In reality you would hear the engines when she is at the quayside and pulling away, once she’s moved off a short distance you will not hear them.  This does not happen on a small lake because the speaker is often too large and the volume turned up.  Just stand at any quayside and listen to a ferry pulling out or a tug passing by.  It would be great if we could fit a system that faded the sound as the boat moved away from the lake side and increased as it approached

If it’s too loud then why not ask the offending numpty to turn it down? Tell him it sounds unrealistic – that’ll dent his pride!

As for a sound fading when the source goes away from you, surely that’s just schoolboy physics? I had to check the calendar……….. we are close to April 1, after all..

Of course, I was only kidding about he GPS thing – although in theory it’s possible.

As Dave says, if its too loud, turn the damn thing down!!. I don’t know what size ponds you use, but when my PT109 is out in the middle of our pond you can only just barely hear the engine sound, although when at dockside, it blasts out very loud.

Again, basic physics says that the SPL (sound pressure level) decreases as the square of the distance from the source. So it doesn’t need the boat to go out very far for the loudness to decrease considerably.

You know, one of the aircraft guys has actually suggested a GPS enbaled sound unit so that when the plane is coming towards you, the sound would increase in pitch artificially to enhance the natural doppler effect, and lower the pitch when going away, so the GPS idea isn’t so far fetched.

Need to think "outside the box" sometimes guys.

I am not a fan of engine noises. There is just something not right about  the sound of a hulking great diesel engine coming from  the depths of a tiddly 2 foot boat. Its a bit like having a santa fe locomotive horn on a moped. Sirens and so forth are ok. Sorry. Personal opinion.    Ashley

Ashley, you can put whatever sound you like on the module or order it with whatever sounds you want. If you don’t want an engine noise, then either don’t put one on the module or don’t wire in the throttle lead. You can put your favourite songs on it if you want. I really can’t see why there has to be any objection at all.

I agree with David. if it’s not your cup of tea then fine but there are many others who love the sound of what it would actually sound like.Each to there own but don’t spoil it for the rest.

I am simply offering my personal viewpoint on the sound thing. Ashley, I do understand that what you are saying is your personal taste only. But I can tell you we have sold hundreds of sound modules and without fail, every customer wants an engine sound so engine sounds are very popular for model boats and indeed all models, tanks and aircraft alike.

I think the recent posting by Paul Miller is clearly indicative of the determination that a very vocal minority have who are determined to poison our hobby at every available opportunity by bitching and complaining at every turn.

The hobby of model boating is supposed to be enjoyed by everybody and is not supposed to be an opportunity to vent your anger at any newcomer who wants to make an entry into your sacred market.

To be honest Model (What a strange name?) I would have just pulled tongues at him.   Even if what he said was correct….so what?  You’re presumably in business to make a profit, and one of the ways to ensure that is to get your products talked about.  Couldn’t blame you.

Just take what he says with a pinch of salt, a certain type of person is best ignored.  He might even be used to it.

So, my recent posting to Ashley seems to have bought the worst out in David Harrison of Model Solutions of Canada Ltd., Trying to link my comments to Ashley, to the first paragraph of his post by ‘association’ is frankly silly and a tad rude.

 Just for the record David, I started playing with model boats aged five with a clockwork tinplate boat I think made by Tri-Ang. Fifty seven years later I am still playing with model boats, though now equipped with the latest technology in motors, esc’s sound generators and construction techniques. I would add that I have also built 0 and 00 gauge model railways,garden railways and large, scale model helicopters, these fitted with the most up todate avionic packs and of late jet propulsion. I have also enjoyed the companionship of several clubs and their members over these many years and done my share of committee work to boot.

The above is hardly the CV of a person ‘determined to poison our hobby at every available oppotunity by bitching and complaining at every turn’, as you claim.

kgurd, which ever system you choose to go with do try and make sure you hear it before you buy and that the backup is there for you should things go wrong.

BTW, our pre and post sales support is exemplary, unlike some companies in the model business who don’t even provide telephone support.  If anything does go wrong, you can always email us or call us. Buying from Canada does not mean you don’t get all the after sales support you need. I believe there are many horror stories of the non-existent after sales support that JJC provided when they were in business. So conversely being made in Britain is no guarantee of getting good service either.

And in case anyone didn’t know, I’m British too, having lived in Suffolk for the first 30 years of my life. So our products are designed using good solid British engineering.

 I think my credentials are also worth noting regarding my suitability to comment on the state of modelling etc.  I have been designing and building electronics since I was aged 10 and built my first vacuum tube R/C transmitter using a 90Volt battery when I was 15. Now, with 47 years of electronics experience behind me I am trying to move the yardsticks forward in our hobby by using advanced technologies and creative, out of the box thinking, to bring new and differently implemented sound effects systems to the hobby.

If people just stayed with the same old technology and the same old products as before, we’d still be using those vacuum tube transmitters and lugging those 90Volt batteries to the lake or airfield instead of being able to use the remarkable new 2.4GHz radios that we now have access to.
