Today at different stages, I converted the resin castings for the hatches into finished hatches.

First job was to attatch a picture framing steel pin through the centre hole in the hatch securing wheel to make the hatch "watertight", using cyano, and after clipping about 5mm off the length of the pin I glued the wheel into the raised dimple on the hatch cover!

Then I had to cut the "springs" that hold the hatches shut to length to fit between the hatch arms, Some were twin springs, whilst others were single sprinmgs running on a central pin, and once cut to length with the retaining spring shaft cut to length were threaded on the the hatch arms, by way of previously drilled holes and superglued in place.

The "springs" themselves were made from anealed brass wire wound around the brass wire I was going to use as the centre part to the spring on the hatches.

Once these had been glued in place, again with cyano, I drilled 2mm holes in the two rased nodules and glued in place the two "locking" clamps to hold the hatches closed watertight ………….just as on the films of old WW2 submarine warfare that I tend to watch with monotonous repitition, lol

These 8 hatches are for the William and Kate, of New Brighton, and have only square or rectangulat hatches, whilst on the Princess Mary of Padstow there are some circular hatches as well………..saves the monotony I suppose, hahaaa!!!

All 16 hatches will be sprayed up tomorrow in Ford Pearl Grey

had a monumental cock up of my own making this morning!

Had already sprayed the two funnels with etching primer as I wanted the filler and then white primer on adhear to the card based funnels before giving them a topcoat of Ivory White……….basically a cream colour that looked to be the colour of the original boat and then began setting up the 11 cowl vents for painting!

The etching primer was still wet when I caught the plate that they were sat on and the whole lot fell to the ground and in to a pile of sanding dust…….back to the drawing board it was for those 11 items with a full rub down once dry and start all over again. Just to say they had their new coats of primer this eveninmg and now waiting for their first of two coats of white undercoat, before the cream top coat is added to them all.

And finally this evening I detailed all 16 hatches with metal coat brass onto the areas needed!
I also added the deck lights into the deck of the Princess Mary this afternoon.

Getting there slowly, but increasing in enthusiasm.

It's getting to the point I don't know what to say next. They are both looking absolutely superb. I'm with you on the Humbrol metallic paint. Its a brilliant product and I use it all the time. Excellent for weathering finishes, I use the steel and gunmetal most.

Those and brass/copper are my ones too, as a lot of the latter two on a lifeboat, lol

More done, but I'm not happy with the wooden bases of the coxs'ns back rests, so will have a think about that.Probably in bed tonight whilst my brain is racing.

Have also picked out the 10 gooseneck vents for each of the two boats and drilled in to the base of each to take an 0.8mm piece of copper wire to help locate and hold the vent to the deck.

                These will be painted tomorrow.

Once that has been done, I think most of the fittings have been painted, and I can then start gluing them all on to the boats in turn.

I think that once that has started one will see a rapid change in how both boats will look.

One has to modify certain items fabricated now and then to make sure that they look as they should, and yet allow for items used for a special function to actually fit and work without the item to look wrong.

One occasion was this afternoon when the servo I had for the steering would not fit as it was tpoop high for the top of the steering box to fit on to!

And so, rather than raise the hight of the profile of the pannelled box I cut out a rectangle the size of the servo body in to the "floor" of the box, and then added two more layers to the base of the box to give it a look of a moulded wooden flange, once painted.

However I will say to my two compatriots…….when you come to fit out the steering………….use a 3'4 or mini servo.

However, my modification to mine has worked and the servo now fits.

aven't finished the steering links yet as the brass rod has to be shaped, but the slots for it have been cut in the stern facing end for them to flow from the rudder top tiller member through to the tiller on the servo.
But I've had enough for tonight and shall continue that little job tomorrow to its conclusion.

I just can't stop as I get to this point in a build, checking for anything that I might have left behind that I made masters for and then cast in multiples earlier.
This time I found the reverse gearing wheels and supports to mount them on to the cockpit consol.
So I put 6 wheels together with their supports, using super glue, and have left them to set, before painting them in brass whilst sipping a beer, and watching M*A*S*H.
They'll be ready for mounting them on to the cockpit consols of the two boats I an building and two for Martin.

This morning I put together the instruments and hatches for the two different cabins. All of the little bits that both this and the later 51' Barnett Mk1 Stromness class lifeboats had in common have come in very usefull.

                        Livens the models up somewhat!

The boats grow day by day now, with increasing detail.

no plan view showing its position so which way should it go……..

Ether across beam of the boat, as here?

I have been a busy bee today in order to get the consols with their detailing set in to the cabin superstructures.

1] I "glazed" the inner "opening" port light windows, by placing them flat on to some masking tape, sticky side up, to hold then flat and type to the board, and poured in to the centre some clear 20 minute setting two part epoxy, to simulater the thick domed glass in the port lights.

2] I glued in, the engine header tanks on the Princess mary, and painted with filler primer, after painting multiple coats of cellulose sanding sealer on to the William and Kate Johnston, before spraying it with polar grey ford rattle can.

3] I dry fit the consols in to the cockpits of both boats, and determined where I was going to apply the heavy duty glue, withoput getting the sticky messy gloopy glue that sticks anything to everything if not carefull.

Once I had found where to apply the glue I took the consols out in turn, and applied the glue, which was of the same make up as other builders glues like Sticks like Sh*t, and called Stixall…………….and it really does do what it says on the tube, in the correct possition not to leak out into the cockpit.

Finally glued in place I clamped the wings of the cockpit tight up to the wooden consols with two of my large G Cramps, and have now been left to set overnight, just to make sure they have stuck well and truely.

Well, blow me down with a beer bottle!!!

After fitting the consol, I offered the cabin up to the access hole, and the first one wouldn't fit, and so tried the second cabin to the other boat and that wouldn't fit either!.

I worked out that it was the pieces of corner strengthening of the consol on each cabin was hitting the stern corner of the timber making up the rim to the deck opening.

So! what to do…….. I couldnt remove the cockpit strengtheners for the consols and so it meant that a section of the aft end of the combing for hull access had to be cut away, which with the aid of a drill and 3mm bit, plus a sharp 6mm bladed chisel, I cut out two sections sections at the aft corners, and the 1st cabin now fits perfectly with no sloppiness or movement at all.

Just have to do the same now with the second boat as soon as the IOM TT Races preview is over.

Just looking forward to watching the first race on my birthday on Saturday, as I missed it all last year……part of my summer viewing, and far more interesting and watchable than the F1 has become in recent years and no longer watch………mind you for many years, I was a biker………..just too old and fat these years, lol.

Both boats have had the final detailing of the motor consol detailing and have now been fixed in place in the cabins.

It seems the more I put together, the more I find to do for each boat.

This afternoon I spotted on pictures of both boats, wooden upright mooring bollards.

I had bases fro the previous Barnett I had built so just cut the wood and this evening, glued uprights to bases.

I'll fill any gaps between the bases and wood with a filler, and then give a few coats of wood stain on the timber before painting the bases.

Gave up at the end of LAST season totally disillusianed by it all.

Now I watch the British touring car, the Austral asian touring car and sometimes the Moto gp…………BUT ALWAYS the IOM TT races.

I watch the Moto GP as well and sometimes the World Superbikes, also the Touring Cars when I'm at my mother's. Have to try and restrict myself as otherwise would get nothing else done. Not enough time as it is!

Better let you get on with your builds!

                                        Chris

no problems Chris, always nice to chat about other worldly things or else a build log would just become tedious and self gratifying.

Been doing other jobs today that have taken time, but got a chance this evening whilst watching one of my favourites."Where Eagles Dare" to sand clean the deck bollards for the 3 boats and paint the hinges and hasps on the rope lockers with brass coloured Humbrol paint.

Tonight I'll sandinig seal the wood with several coats of celulose sealer whilst watching the sunset and picking my daughter up from her walk.

All my little bollards, [bollards I said, lol] have been stained, laquered, painted grey on the feet, and then the brass paint added to the top "cappings" and corner segments for allowing the rope lines to swing and not to chaffe when moored.

And so this afternoon after getting back from the Vic, I continued with my quest to finish off the small things that I had initially missed and then getting other parts painted ready for fixing.

The first task was to fablicate from plastic sheet and tubing for the two different designs of signaling lamp support mast, which I have cut to length, made their bases and just have to do a little brass rod anealing to get the odd shape of one of the two masts.

Then in a piece of scrap timber I drilled 76 holes to take the bases attached to the 3D printed 2 hole stanchions that a friend of a friend printed for me last year.

These were fitted with leather work eyelets ready once painted for gluing on the the deck end of the rails

Enough of feeling sorry for myself, as it only gets you more depressed, and so on with the building and painting of the parts for a mass sticking on to the decks of both boats this week,

Tonight, after my daughter went back to York to clean and clear her flat after 4 years of UNI, with a year out in business, she has been rewarded with a 1st class honours degree and a £66k debt whilst two of her lecturers spent half their last year on days off for strikes,……….but am I proud of her!

And that was my motivation for thinking tonight that I should get off my a r s e, and get on with my models.

So I have readied the mooring bitts, 1 search light for the William and Kate Johnston and the Gooseneck vents for both lifeboats.

                                                  Tomorrow, I will paint them.

Next job that I had been putting off was the compass binacle each composing of some 7 pieces and some milliput, as I had made and last cast for the 51' Barnett and the 2 x 46' Watsons that I built some 11 or so years ago.

I finally found most parts scattered in diferent bags all over the shop. But I could only find 1 "rack" for holding the compass compensating balls, and just couldn't find the plastic beads that I was going to use as I had in the past for the balls.

So for the two racks per binacle I used some brass wire with a loop in the end to sit each ball on to, and for the compensating balls I mixed some milliput and between my fingers rolled 6 balls, two per binacle.

I then constructed the 3 binacles, each consisting of binacle main body, the compass anti glare hood, the compass lamp, 2 x comp ball holders and the two balls. I also filled inside the compass hood with some miliput to level off the surface for inscribing a compass in to each hood.

Just need to paint them, and the balls seperately before attaching the balls to their holders.

Apart from marking the actual compass face on the top of the binacle all 3 of the compass binacles are ready.
