      Hi guys

I am just getting into boat as my retirement hobby, after flying helicopters for a few years.

whilst clearing out the loft recently I came across two volumes of the mecano magazine dated 1966 and 1967, in the magazine was a plan for a model boat losley based on the Cowes Torqauy racers of the day.

The plan shows a 1.5 diesel as a power unit, how would I go about choseing a motor battery prop combo to suit.

      Many thanks Clive

Clive. How big is this little gem please? Brushless motors, if you wanted to go this way, are cheap enough now, but a small model will still go well on a traditional speed 400 (or something).

Battery choice depends on how fast you want to go, and, if flying helicopters..do you have any useable batteries left of a decent capacity? Do you just wish to zoom about the lake or go really really fast?

It's probably Ron Warring's 'Project 66', in the Jan/Feb/Mar copies of the 1966 Meccano Magazine. If so, we are talking about a 22.5" balsa hull – slap in my 'EeZeBilt' range. The magazines, with plans, are available for free on the net here:

I have found that a small cheap brushless – typically an EMax CF2822 (get one off ebay for around £5) driving a 35mm prop with 7.6v of NiMH gives a sparkling performance for these light boats.  I think that a 1.5cc diesel would be rather over-egging the power – a 0.5cc diesel would make one go pretty fast…

I remember building this and putting an M. E. Snipe 1.5cc engine in it. It was very quick by the standards of the day, too quick for my push button home made rc. It ended up in pieces after ‘communicating’ rapidly with the bank.
With modern radio and brushless, it should be great fun. Good luck, I look forward to seeing some pictures.
