Hi, I would like to replace the plastic kit of a crane that is provided with the kit I am building with a crane that I can operate by my radio control set. I have spent a fair bit of time on the internet trying to source either a kit that I can make and install or a crane that is on a child's toy that I can remove/modify and install on the rear deck.

I am only using Two channels (Propulsion & Steering) at the moment so have spare to rotate, raise/lower the jib and operate the winch.

Has anybody done something similar and can give me inspiration.

      Phil

It might help to tell us the scale you are working to, as well as showing a picture of the type of crane you want to use.

It should not be too difficult to mount any crane on a rotating base, and connect that direct to a servo. You should be able to run the crane line under the crane as well, and connect that to a motor. You would then also need:

          – At least one 'servo slowing' device – **LINK** to make the crane slew at the proper speed

          – a geared slow motor for the line – **LINK**

          – an R/C switch to operate the crane line – **LINK**

These are the cheapest I could easily find on the net. I have provided them as examples – you may well wish to get better items at a higher price…

The scale of the boat is 1/32, I don't have a photo of the crane I would like to use but the one with the kit is a 10 tonne Atlas crane used for loading/unloading of general items, oil drums etc.

There are some crane sets here, with a 'function set' for adding radio control to a crane at the bottom of the page. You can download the instructions.

I would be inclined to go with the Robbe kit here, and scratch-build my own controls…
