      I have built an astra 30 inch offshore racer (mm 2404) and I was thinking of coating the plywood hull with a coat of fiberglass resin then painting over that.any opinions or better ideas for a finish

          There are many ways of finishing a plywood model with resin, but I would strongly advise you against using ordinary polyester lay-up resin. It takes a long time to set fully and is a swine to sand back to a smooth finish. Rather use a proper epoxy finishing resin such as Z-Poxy. You can thin it down 10% or so with isopropyl alcohol to make it easier to brush on. After about 3 hours in a warm room you will find it sands back very easily with 240 or 320 silicon-carbide finishing paper. I use Halfords acrylic car paint sprays for finishing over epoxy.

            I've never done the epoxy route OUTSIDE a boat, but many have. I always use cellulose sanding sealer, many coats, rubbed down to a perfect finish, then self-etch primer/surfacer, sprayed and well rubbed down, then enamel paint, because it's tough as old boots if you use a quality paint, like Rustoleum or HMG. But epoxy (WEST) INSIDE to ensure waterproofing, definitely.

              I use Eze-cote and glass cloth. Very easy to use, no smell, water wash. Do it in the warm though. Takes ages to dry if its a bit cold (like now),
