      Good Day Team

A close friend wishes to purchase the kit of a "Tramp" type merchant ship. I was thinking of the Deans Marine kits of say the Hudson River, the SS Cordene, or the Melanie. He is very much the beginner and request the thoughts of the team in recommending the direction he should take. Many thanks.

SS Balboa. Yes its scratch, but given the nature of the plan, probably easier than most kits. It should be in the plan list.

            Greetings Edwin

I am building the SS Balboa at the moment, I increased the length to 30 inches I think it would be easier to build., the plan I had showed a length of 24 inches, too small in my opinion.

            Regards

            Bryan Aston

              Good Day Bryan

Thank you for the information. I'm pleased that you mentioned the size of the original SS Balboa plans, this seemed to be a problem for my friend, when the matter was discussed.

While on the subject, may I request your opinion please regarding the Deans Marine kit of the Hudson River. Whilst my home is in Johannesburg, no really active RC boat club, my friend lives in Durban and is a member of the very active Durban Radio Boat Club, with experienced technical gents. who would be more than happy to assist with the build of a more detailed model.

              Your assistance is appreciated.

              Kind regards

              Edwin

                Hello Edwin,

I have only built two boats , a scratch built Sea Commander and a kit Fairey Huntsman which was a lot more trouble to build than the Commander, I have not completed the Balboa yet.

I suggest you forward your request for info. on the Hudson River to the experts on the forum as I am no expert.

                Regards

                Bryan

Deans offer an attractive range of subjects but some of the older kits can be a bit tricky in certain areas and need some more experienced modelling input to get a good result. However, they have recently released the SS Truro which features laser cut parts and may be easier to build although I have not seen it myself. It does cost a bit more than the earlier models though.

                    Good Day Colin and Bryan

Hope all goes well Bryan with build of the Balboa. Thank you Colin for the information on the SS Truro, it certainly looks like a fine ship.

                    Kind regards

                    Edwin
