Hello everyone,

This is my first post in the forum here on Model Boats as I am more usually found looking after the site for one of our sister magazines, Military Modelling. However, I do make the occasional ship model in 1/700 and 1/350 scales and I had some news come through yesterday which I thought just might be of interest to some here as well. Bronco Models, who make a range of 1/35 armour models also do a number of 1/350 scale ships. News yesterday that one of their forthcoming releases will be the USS San Diego, LPD-22.

Hope that will be of interest to some.

I know that some scratch builders of scale models have used a plastic kit as their starting point and scaled up all the measurements , taken off the plastic kit, to create thier own scale working model. Together with photographs, they can build a decent model without having to obtain official plans, which for some vessels can be very difficult.

Just as a bit of an update to this one, and having just posted one of the latest features on the Rhino Barge, I thought it would be appropriate that I just said hello again, and explain that I am helping out Paul and Colin and starting to look after some of the maintenance of the website, posting features and the like while Colin continues to look after the forum for everyone.

Hello Robin and welcome,

In the earlier post, Paul mentioned the use of plastics as a starting point for a scale model. The magazine regularly features r/c conversions of these kits which are always of interest. A couple of months ago Phil Button converted Revell's Tug 'Lucky' to r/c, this was quite and achievement due to the small size of the model. This tug is my current plastic build (in addition to r/c models) which I am building as the original 1955 release as US Harbor tug 'Long Beach'. Who knows, it has such an interesting colour scheme, it could easily be up-scaled to become a future r/c build.

Yes, I have done static models of ships over the years, it is the r/c side that will be new to me mostly. Interesting that the size of the plastic models on the market these days seems to be getting bigger, opening up more possibilities to add power to them I guess.

I have already written to Robin directly earlier this week and thanked him for his short (!) service. The change has occurred because of, as Robin neatly puts it, 'some things come along that you can't plan for', that were beyond his (and my), control.

The San Diego itself is still not released as far as I know, though I do have Revell's New York which I need to get started, another of the same class. It is one of two or three large scale ships I have on hand and will certainly share on the forum when I can get to them.

Though not yet in the shops as I write this, Bronco have sent me some pictures of their test Shot of their 1/350 San Antonio assembled. Thanks to Bronco for sending them through. Certainly looks good, see what you think.

Hi Robin I saw the kit at Telford and was impressed at the time. The level of detail and PE is so good . There was a photo tour in Range Finder in 2013 of the USS Green Bay LPD 20 from pictures provided by Kurt Grainer . I am looking at the Chinese navy LPD 071 kited by Trumpeter at 1:350 for possible use in scratch building a 1:144 equivalent. . Using a similar method Paul Bannon was displaying for the first time at Harrogate his superb 1:144 Russian Carrier the Admiral Kutnetzov , built with the aid of . the Trumpeter kit .

In your last picture the quality of the air group and the LCAC shown is amazing and I very much like the clear injection moulding which makes life so much easier when exposing the canopy and windows . I am not taken one little bit having to use paint to replicate canopy's . When building the Kiev my first project was to get to grips with a 1:144 YAK 38 with a clear canopy alas I failed when it came to following the same path with the KA25 ASW helicopter .

Hi Dave (Wooley), This one hasn't been released yet so I would only guess it was either their New York or the Revell New York you may have seen at Telford (both in 1/350) as I'm not aware of the San Antonio kits being in production yet. Either way they are excellent. I did see the piece on the Green Bay, very useful. Best of luck with your 1/144 build.

What's due here any time via Revell /Hobbico is a (pre-built and not cheap), 1/72 USS Fletcher designed for fitting with R/C gear. That will be big.

Hi Robin Looking back at the pictures taken at Telford your quite right The San Antonio class LPD was the Revel New York . I noted your comments re- a Hobbico 1:72nd USS Fletcher . I seem to remember a few years back at Dortmund that the rumour mill was in overdrive at the prospect of Revell launching a 1;72nd Fletcher class, kit. This of course never happened.
