Here is an easy way of bending planks

Just indent the inner side of the plank

      Like it?

Hi. Bob, thanks for that tip I will try it for the sharp bend needed at the bow.

        Regards.

          Hello Eddie

Thanks for the photos and yes I can use them. The area that really interests me is the round bilge to chine transitions. It is easy to cheat on the first layers but I would like the final planking to be as authentic as possible.

I know Ray. it will be underwater but I can't help it!

I used this strip bending tool on the Fisher planking. Comes with different jaws for various bending jobs. Must be used carefully of course -or it will crush the wood. Bought from CMB.

Here is a picture of Westmoreland in full flight.str59.jpeg

The picture is from a book by Kent and Freestone on building TSB's.

This picture is the detail of the joint of the chine were it changes from square to rounded at the bow and stern.

and this is my attempt at that joint.img_1199.jpg

                Thanks Eddie

                Very interesting and great progress.

I had an IT calamity about 10 days ago when the hard drive simply vanished while online on a news feed. I tried re-starting and got the ominous message – hard drive not found!.

It is still at the computer repair shop and after a week of recovering nothing, they told me yesterday that they were starting to find some files. They are now my best friends as although I was quite well backed up, it is always a huge inconvenience and some of my recent photos (of Kimberley) did not get on the backup.

As a salutary footnote, when it happened I found the underside of the laptop to be far too hot despite the fan working. I can understand a hard drive failure through getting cooked but if it is a solid state hard drive like mine it can apparently self-destruct, vanish if the drive gets too full. I am told that once the memory gets to around 90% full it can become unstable and on some systems, fail without any warning. That could have happened to mine as the hard drive was about 90% full but I am inclined to think it was the high temperature – no hot electric smells however.

Sorry about thee diversion but if you have a solid state hard drive beware. They are great for speed but vulnerable in these aspects.

Hope to be back with photos soon.

                  Hi Tim

Had a similar issue with an overheating laptop. It seems the fans suck in enough dust to choke themselves hence the fan is achieving nothing. Cleaned out fans and laptop performed well thereafter.

Enjoying the rest of the article btw.

Hi. Tim, sorry to hear about your IT problems, it is a real pain when that happens.

I have got to order some more 1.5X6mm bass planking, as well as some sheet to make the covering board’s and rails, as soon as I get them I can get busy on the top layer of planking. In the meantime I am trying to work out how to fit the servo winches, because the hull is shallow they will have to extend into the hatch cover area.

                    Regards.

                    Eddie.

                      Hello Eddie and Stuart.

It took over a week but in the end the hard drive gave up its treasures and I have everything restored. I haven't lost any of the photos so I will be putting up some of the latest progress on Kimberley.

                      Phew!"!

The Phoenix Marine Model Club are having an open day this Wednesday 11th August at their lake at Silvermere Golf Club in Surrey, this maybe an ideal time to see many barges in action, since the formal AMBO racing was wound up pre-covid. The Isle of White Mafia Simmonds & Samson are coming to the main land for thev&a ambo finals sept 17 031.jpg get together, Mr Watts and myself will be there if anybody wants a sail of my barge Veronica come and find me

This is my favourite picture of Richard and Peter racing.

Well ,The Pheonix MBC open day was a great success for us barge sailors getting together after nearly 2 yearssilver 4.jpg, Richard Chesney had Nancy Grey on display built by Kim Hollands to Richards drawings, Peter Simmonds & Dave Sansom came over from the Isle of Wight and a good time was had by all, even if there wasn't much wind

Peters Coastal Barge Cambria and Dave's smaller 30" barge give a good comparison, If anybody is in the market for one of Peters Veronica's he has one for sail contact me for Peters number.

Super Venue and quite a few members of the public/Golfing community took interest

Thanks Richard C for the invitation.

Absolutely beautiful models gents. I think the Thames sailing barge has to be one of the most attractive and atmospheric scale yachts there is and to see so many of them together is simply wonderful.

                                                Happy New Year Folks,

Well with the dawning a new year I need to begin with a new project as many will have seen I have been sailing a Veronica Thames Sailing Barge built by the "Master" Peter Simmonds for the last 7 years, and when I recently had the opportunity to buy a set of drawings and parts I jumped at it, not sure what it is about barges but rather like steam engines they seem to come alive on the water and there are plenty of factors to get them sailing well so here goes, this one may have the bowsprit rig for variety.

When the first kits of Laser cut parts came out from Traplet there were a few issues as supplied but I'm fortunate to know the areas that need to be adjusted, the bulkheads are cut from 1/8" ply and need to be laminated to make the required 1/4" thickness, so here are the first 3 clamped and glued together.

This could be a long haul

                                                  Hi All,

I have found a good building board from a piece of old furniture I dismantled recently 4 feet long, with the centre line marked and the bulkhead positions marked. The Laser burnt ply parts for the keel in the kit are 1/8" thick and jointed and laminated to form the keel/stem, a fair amount of alteration needed to the bulkheads because the original drawing and subsequent cut parts were the wrong shape but this is making the build much more interesting

(Note the errors were corrected in the more recent drawings & parts by SARIK)ver 2 050122.jpg

Well some progress with Veronica, all the bulkheads in place fixed down to the cross pieces on the building board, The chines and gunwhales are laminated from 1/8" X 1/2" balsa and take the curve at the bow better than I expected the central section will be 1/16" plywood sides and bottom panels, the bow and stern planked with strips of 1/16" ply, maybe on the water by 2023 If I'm lucky !
