                    portl 1 bow.jpgMorning All,

In my attempt to bore everybody and as a couple of my other projects are at the painting stage and realising how much I am missing the AMBO barge racing, I thought at the moment with furlough time on my hands something rather more time consuming was required, and I need a barge with a bowsprit, so happy days

A couple of years ago I acquired a 1/24th a hull for TSB Portlight from Dave Watts (Mastman) who has a fabulous range of hulls and all the fittings you may not want to make. The hull came with a CD with drawings of the fullsize barge and rig, but no model information, which is fine by me as I have Staysail rigged Veronica built by Peter Simmonds as a bench mark and a smaller 30" TSB Giraldaimg_20200429_163601.jpg which is earlier on this thread.

There are a good set of photos of Portlight online she is not in commission currently.

The first stage is to establish the setting out of the hard points required for the rig ie mast, shrouds and keel position as Veronica is a known quantity I'm using her dims as a guide, and she's fast

I will be bonding some spruce strips to the sides and have marked the centre line on the bottom of the hull and marked the keel bolt hole position, I have a spare bulb keel and will be using it to save time.

Please jump in at any time !!

                    Regards Ray

Not much progress today 😯managed to bond a couple of lengths of timber for the inwhales and an internal stern post with some fibre glass compound from Wilko's must be 5 years old and jolly glad it set !! Will be making some card templates for 2 internal bulkhead s Fore & aft of the mast position.

Another fascinating project. Where do you find them all? What else is hiding under your bench?

I must look the boat up on the web.

                                Hi Tim,

Stock piling stuff for years and don't mention the 300 Airfix kits up the loft !!

Reasonable stocks of materials also helps never only buy 1 when 5 will do 😀

I thought I'd better start Portlight now as SWMBO asked if she could have it for for a planter for herbs !!!!

I hope it's improving for you out there, our hols now cancelled 😢

                                Regards Ray

One of our neighbours, who is in to planes and railways as well as boats, similarly had 100's of plastic kits in the loft but realising he was just collecting them rather than building them and would never have enough time anyway had a clear out and sold most of them.

He has recently had another sort out (finding things either lost or forgotten about!) and sold a loco and some flying plane kits. With the proceeds he has bought a small number of kits of things that he has always wanted.

I think this collecting/OCD thing is definitely a man thing with in my case a fixation on Fairey Marine boats. In the garage for my Triumph Thunderbird Sport motorbike I have the 4 (or is it 5!) different seats that were available for it along with many other parts in different colours.

                                  Is help available for this!

                                        img_20200501_094026.jpgHi All,

What a fabulous collection of Fairey's, travelling boxes extremely well made !!I

I can't put my boats on show in one place, because I think they would cart me away to the Priory for treatment 😮

Back to the tsb Portlight, bulkhead's clamped and tacked on position with the mast support and one of my smaller gee cramps , using balsa laminated inwhales round the curved sections for attaching the deck later. Bonded the bulkheads and keel plate all 1/4" ply , now thinking of the shroud attachment points from sheet brass, as Portlight is constructed with steel I don't think she would have external chainplates like a wooden barge ? ?

                                            Hi Ray

Difficult to be certain from photos but I think it would be highly likely that the steel barges would have external chainplates bolted or riveted through the bulwarks and the topside. This would be before welding and the advantage of having them externally would be not having to penetrate the decks.

                                            Just a thought.

                                              Hello Dave

Only using the general arrangement drawing, I'm making it up as I go along, but there is an AMBO booklet Richard used to give away with the basic principles of fitting out a grp hull. The rig will be as Veronica ✔

                                              Hi Tim,

Thank's I have been wondering what to do ? The photos of her in a drydock lighter online doesn't show that part, I have a the Defiance down the road on the Medway, but it's a new build 2008 welded I will keep checking, chain plates on the outside would be easier 😀I

                                                On the subject of Airfix

I worked out if I live to 100 I would still have some over so I stopped buying.

On the Isle of Wight don't get much chance to see TSB in real life.

These photos hold so much detail

                                                      Hi Dave,

Not sure of your status regarding working? but I'm furloughed from work for the time being (it's great) although we keep in touch via Microsoft teams once a week to see what's going or not going on in London construction. This is the rainy day we have been waiting for get building those kits !!

                                                      Eddie,

You are a life saver with your photos as we can't just pop down to Faversham to see her, but Tim R was right the shroud attachment points seem to be built into the bulwarks, and as they will be fitted after the deck I will put some brass tag fixing points along the gunwhale. I think is important to get all the structural works right.

TSB Defiance appears to have extensions to her frames, but she is relatively new.

                                                      Regards Ray
