Hi Martin bloody hell are you OK ?? take it easy .As for the deck I cannot find a way of cutting the teak clean ,so what I thought I would do is cheat ! stick down a sheet then ink in the caulking ,poss not the best way but I only have 1/32 teak …….mark

Martin, very sorry to hear about your illness, we all hope you are making a good recovery. Hopefully as the weather improves you can get back to the shed as long as you take things easy. Keep us updated.

Mark, you could try scoring the teak sheet and then inking along the scoring line, but find a bit to practice on first!

Hi Colin thats kind of what I was hoping to do maybe if I had say 1.5 mm teak I would be able to run it through a band saw ,as this is thin it will not curve without buckling up my only other option is to cut mine into curved lenths and glue down with margin pins in between for the caulking …….mark

Thanks Colin, Mark. Although the big pain scared the bejeezus out of me, by the time the ambulance man had the blood pressure thing on me I felt fine! And have done ever since, including while they were putting a stent in my heart! It really is remarkable what they can do these days. But I feel something of a fraud as I really feel fine.

I used to use a Minicraft mini circular saw to make deck planks, but a well drawn deck can be almost as convincing and indeed on older models I think it looks bang on.

Nice job on the covering boards, btw.

Oh yes, I've thought about it and read the book about RC yachts that my dear lady bought me, but I'm not sure I understand much of it. I suppose the standing rigging will need to be worked out first.

Currently I have slot car masters to do for friends, but they at least can be done in the my little indoor workshop as and when I feel like it. Doc. says I ought to be working up to half an hour of exercise. So that has to take priority currently. Haven't had a ciggy since Christmas day either.

That IS a valid question, Mark, but then it'd be another half hour back, BUT, you have given me an idea<G>

I will try it once I have built up to the full distance, provided a 40 tonner doesn't put me in the ditch on the way there!

Slot car racing is big again. 2 clubs again in Southend, but Wonderland has gone from the seafront alas. I used to go there and play pool then go upstairs and race on the King track. I was crap at both!

                                  Hello Martin,

I have been working with wood for quite some time and have been "into" RC since the 1970's. Now that I am retired, I am considering a model sailboat kit and would like to hear if anyone has experience with the following company and its 165 cm sailboat:

                                  http://www.tippecanoeboats.com/t65-racing-sloop

For what it is worth, I have found that the UV-cured liquid plastic called BONDIC comes in handy with my RC vehicles:

                                    Ron,

I could never recommend you spend hundreds of dollars on a kit! It looks nice, but there are books on building a wooden hull and plans to help you do it. R/C gear is cheap these days. I don't know about the fittings as I make everything. I'm too tight to buy stuff.

I would say that unless you always sail alone, building to a recognized class would be better, in which case I'd go for the beautiful J Class which is big in America.

                                    Just my view of things.

That Bondic stuff sounds brilliant. New to me and thanks for the link.

                                    Cheers,

I'm fine if a little busy with the model car work. I did 3 masters for slot car bodies in one week!

Can we not persuade you to do a laid planked deck after all? It looks so nice joggled into king plank and vent surrounds.

Listen to me, spending someone else's time<G>

                                                Greetings all

As a change from building power boats I thought I would try a sailing boat ,so I bought a Surmount 800 yacht, I have a slight problem ,as I have dodgy knees ,I always launched and recovered the power boats with a modified fishing trolley, this meant that. I did not have to bend down, does anyone have a method of launching and recovering a yacht by a similar method without using the mast, the very long keel is the biggest problem, any suggestions?

                                                Regards

I do not have all thye tools necessary to build from scratch the kind of Sailing Ship I am looking for. So, I am looking for a kitthat is high quality and uses hardwood, brass and stainless steel; NO PLASTIC. If She is big ( 2 – 4 meters ) it would be a PLUS. I know about the ROBBE- VALDIVA:

                                                  **LINK**

And the T47 and T65 from TIPPECANOE BOATS:

                                                  **LINK**

In the FLYING RC ARENA, what I am looking for would be called STAND-OFF SCALE here in the States. In Sailing Ships, I am having a hard time finding the quality WOOD-ONLY build of Will Lesh's Boats and the sort-of-scale of the ROBBE VALDIVA. I don't mind spending 600 – 700 POUND STIRLING for a kit if the final product "SPEAKS TO MY SOUL". Any Sources, Kits, Suggestions?

She will become an experimental "platform" for some "hidden" innovation like FPV ( first person view ) so I can "see" what someone at the helm would see, electronics will probably be full duplex telemetry to send back to shore meteorological data, water temp, current direction and flow rate, and "health" of the on-board battery She would also have GPS for autonomous sailing, a Return-Home function in case of battery failure or radio signal loss, and a "Black-Box" to record all data from a sail ( much like the BB on a commercial airliner).

I used probes and sensors for data collection when I was a college Chemistry lab teacher:

                                                  http://www.vernier.com

Might use some of these in my Boat.

Does anyone use timing transponders for their racing from MyLaps:

                                                  http://www.mylaps.com/en/products/rc4-hybrid-transponder/79

I use these things in my RC automobiles and will be adding them to my UAV Drones soon.

Thank you for taking the time to read this silly and long post.
