Hi, eveyone! I was given a model of the fifties (?) cruiser 'H,M,S. Naiad'. I'm not sure which manufacturer made it , but it looks like an Airfix/Revell type model.

It is presented as a static display, and I would like to convert it to RC, having seen a similar size boat on a lake . I understand that it used old servo motors as engines , and was intrigued by this, so I thought to look into it.

Does anyone have a blog/article of a conversion being carried out from a static to a seagoing version, please?

      Thank you, Den, Abertawe.

I doubt that the model can be HMS Naiad as the only plastic kit of that ship is in 1/700th scale and far too small for RC. Can you give a bit more information or perhaps a photo or two of the kit pieces to help identify which model it actually is? In particular, how big is the model as converting to RC does require enough space and reserve of buoyancy to be practical?

The big problem with converting a ready built plastic kit to RC is that the deck may well be glued down and be extremely difficult to remove without damaging the model.

There did use to be a battery powered torpedo device that attached to the bottom of a hull to propel a ready built plastic kit but I haven't seen one for many years and they were not of course radio controlled.

Starting with an unbuilt kit would be an infinitely easier option.

Unless my calculations are wrong as the full size ship had a beam of 50 ft the 1/700 model will be around 0.86 inches beam.

I doubt that an rc conversion is possible.

Not a ship but there might be some ideas for you here and servo motors were used for propulsion:

If it is the Flyhawk kit of the Dido class cruiser HMS Naiad then there is no chance of converting it to R/C as it is far too small.

How long is the hulll of the model you have?

Hi, everyone, and thank you for your help.

I have an apology to make – After I was given the model, I put it on the window cill, and just glanced at it's sleek shape in passing. Since I started this post, (and yesterday) I looked at the model more closely, and discovered that it is a beautifully crafted, hand built scratch model made from CARD! It is so well finished etc., that I'd just assumed it was a kit! The scale is stated as 1/200 on the plinth below ( in Polish!), and here is a photo of the vessel. He also gave me a bueutiful model of a Thames barge, which I may set up as a 'floater'.
