Panache & Starbaby by Vic Smeed

I am hoping to start building my first yacht soon and am undecided at the moment as which to build ,Panache or Starbaby by Vic Smeed.

I have both the plans and build articles for both, or so I thought. Reading the Model Boats special edition on Vic Smeed's designs I see there were parts 2 & 3 in the Model Boats issues of Jan/Feb 1981 for the Panache design. I only had the article that was with the plan and it seemed to be the full build with no mention of subsequent instalments.

It may be a long shot but can anyone confirm this or able to help me out with copies of them?

Magazine Exchange does not list copies available, and ebay only lists the February edition.

Thanks to Larry's help, ( aka The Long Build), I now know that Panache had a second article published in the February edition.

I now have to decide which to build……

Any recommendations or pointers from previous builders of the two designs would be appreciated .

Hi Adrian,

If it's any help the 2 boats are completely different designs

The Starbaby is the small version of Star a sailing cabin cruiser so quite beamy for the length.

Panache is based upon an ocean racing yacht, so much finer lines with better sailing performance, so like chalk & cheese really.

Each have there own charm, I'm a fan of both types.

Worth looking back at the build threads on here as both have been described over the years.

I'd go Panache everytime
