Many ships were extensively modified during their working life. My current paddler had the original open bridge replaced with a wheelhouse.
It can make research difficult as it isn'r always clear when changes were made.

I think as long as you make something that’s authentic in terms of style and scale it’s acceptable. As you say ships were always being modified so any particular construction above the waterline is going to be a snapshot.
