Currently have a vintage GRAUPNER Speed 500 surface drive. Parts availability a problem. Are there any current Surface Drive systems on the market?

Not clear if you're looking for a spares supplier or an alternative. If it's an alternative, what is it to go in? Detail is needed with most questions.

Need new gears for the "Speed 500" system I have, probably 30 years old. If parts not available, thinking of going to a newer complete drive system. I like the surface drive, just don't know whats available.

It's difficult for any of us to remember the details of a system 30 years old, prop size, shaft length etc. Nowadays, graupner 500 refers to a series of motors.

I recommend you contact Prestwich models who specialise in performance boats and are expert in drive systems. I expect you will need a brushless motor, and matching running gear. They will need to know several lengths and sizes to help so be prepared.

Here is a link to them to get you started

If its a dead motor, it is a "standard" can size, so there are lots of drop-in replacements. With 30 years of progress, probably a lot of better ones.

If it is gears, replacement gears are available for users in other branches of radio control like planes and cars.

Replacement prop shafts and props are also available. Graupner didn't usually go for unusual shaft diameters, so there is a wide range of possible replacements, just a question of knowing which bits you want.

If you choose the brushless route, you will need a new speed control as well – with brushless, the motor is only half of the deal, you absolutely do need a speed control to work it. And a servo tester to try it without a radio. And probably a setup card for the ESC.
