I would have thought that 18 minutes flat out sounds pretty good, however you can only tell if you do a little test. Firstly what is the capacity of the ni-cad pack?

Then put an ammeter in line with the motor and see what current its drawing then a quick calculation with the capacity will tell you how long it should last.

Very basically if the motor is pulling 4 amps and the battery is a 4000 mah battery it should last an hour, in which case 18 minutes is rubbish. If however the motor is pulling 12 amps then you would expect the same battery to last 20 minutes, in which case it is in pretty good condition.

                  Correct, in theory!

Without knowing the exact current it is pulling you can't be sure but 18 minutes for a 1700 mah pack sounds reasonable.

Phil. I would just go and buy anew 7.2 Nimh stick. A 3700 mAhr pack is not too expensive, and will probably give you 3 times the actual capacity of your old Nicad one.
