This is a great idea, anything that gets us all actualy making something different is good, it stretches (ha ha) the brain cells too.

Rubber power was popular many years ago, I found this model still in the x list plans of models from ancient model maker and model boats magazines.

MM317 Queen Mary 22.5in oal. Employs rubber drive. Normal cruise 200 yards in 3.5 mins. Simple construction. ** Price £9.00 <!–mstheme–><!–msnavigation–>

      <!–msnavigation–><!–msnavigation–>http://www.xlistplans.demon.co.uk/ <!–mstheme–>

If we were to use the elastic from the wifes nicker drawers,  might we get some interesting model names? any suggestions?

The Great egg race and the spin off programs were great were’nt they, remember the swiming machines? It’s such a pity nothing like this is on now. Heinz Wolf was exactly what a boffin should be like.

        Hi Len

My model is just that bit more expensive than yours.

I recon it cost about a fiver, its built entirely of 1/16" balsa powered by two HP7 batteries and uses an old portable tape recorder motor.

Even the plan was free from Model Shipwright       A.T.

               HI Len,

Sorry for the duf link, I left my brain somewhere. The plan is found by  clicking the xlist link, plans catagories, model boats, semi scale.

That should do it.  I’m off to find my brain now, I must have left it in the shed.

                Hi Len,

You have really opened up a can of worms with this one, never seen so many replies to a thread.  I can see most of the rubber powered models running out of twist in the middle of the lake and ending up over the weir!      The cereal box boat sounds like a winner in some form or another, when are we going to run the event?

                Cheers   Alan..

                  Hi Alan,

when are we going to run the event?     Dunno, It will have to be on a Regatta day so that all can take part. .

I have just spotted another possibility in Feb issue of Model Boats page 48, a report on Weymouth with a Paddle Boat competition, does anyone have a plan of one or do you know who I can ask please?

                                                 Len.

looks like they are using  pipe lagging for the hull again, perhaps the old faithful cheap fan is the power  driving a simple paddle. I believe Barrie Stevens now editor of MMI was the organiser of Weymouth, better get permission before using their design though.

Right, I have decided that it will be a Paddle Boat!.

The hull will be either a bottle / juice carton/ or Take-away carton.

Paddle wheels to have 6 x blades.

                      Motor no bigger than 385.

                      No restriction on gearing.

                      6v power maximum.

                      Rudder allowed.

This will be the Dover Model Boat Association Members Competition, usually run around the date of Traffalgar

                        Hi Len

                        This is great fun

I have already designed a boat but I have a couple of questions.

Is it to be a straight line race or an endurance event or around a course?

And if I used a bottle out of a water cooler (20lit) could I fit 4 motors of the 385 size connected to side and rear paddles and use 8 linked 6v batteries?

                        All the best

                        Paul

                          Hi Paul,

Glad you like the idea, It will be a race accross Kearsney Lake(100yds?).   MOTOR in the singular!.

We usually get around 24 to 30 entries, If you fancy making one and coming down to try your luck you would be made most welcome.

I am trying out a juice carton for a start ( 1 litre).

                          Regards.

                            Hi Len

A straight race of only 100yds, well that sounds easy enough, is there a restriction on multi hulls?

                              Hi Paul,

So long as only one 385 and 6v maximum, multi hulls would be ok, although the more hull in the water would create drag?.

As we are hoping to attract younger entrants,we will frown upon over engineered efforts.

                                Ok Len

I understand about the motor/hull/6v etc.

I assume that it is a straight race across the lake so a free running model would make sense (no need to steer therefore no radio)

I don,t propose to over engineer just to use the victorian technology more effectively.

When is this event to take place and if you wish to attract younger entrants will you be offering them prizes? If so I am sure that some of our members could be persuaded to contribute.

The 3 juniors we had last year are now adults,so we are hoping to attract replacements if we can prize any away from their computers.

We usualy hold the competition around the Battle of Traffalgar time.

Prizes in the past have gone to 1st Lady, 1st Gent, and the 1st Junior home.

How exposed is your boating lake?

Is it subject to cross winds or rough water?

                                      Hi Paul,

Two sides are sheltered by trees, the others are open,we do not suffer that much with the wind, there is a gentle flow of water the length of the lake, but the lagging galleons and the bottle boats crossed ok.

                                      Does this help?.

                                            Hi Len

The nearest I get to a traffic jam is getting stuck behind a tractor or combine harvester where the lanes are to narrow to pass.

Still I imagine we all have a cross to bear.
