      Hi all

I am looking for help with identifying the mast and funnel lights on this vessel as I want to make them "Working". The kit has 8 lights on the main mast in twos but what colours go where? There is NO white all around nav light provided on the mast…is one required. The funnel mast has two facing forward, high up, what colour and what function? The two facing astern can only be white, I hope.

I have tried the owner of the full size and he promised to get back to me, that was some time ago, guess he has "gone fishing". The kit manufacturers have not been able to answer me and the web is just plain confusing. HELP, please

      Mike J

            Hi Kip.

I have looked at the web page many times, but thanks for the link. White masthead light question duly answered with regards to anchoring/mooring, thanks.

I am sure that you will correct me on any or all of the following if required.

Maggie is 26.54m long, therefore should display a white, all around, mast head light when under way according to the bosuns mate web site and all others that I have found.

A 'Fishing' vessel should display red over white all around when fishing.

A 'Trawler' should display green over white all around when trawling

Now please treat me as "thick" if needed. A "trawler" is a "fishing" vessel so which of the above is right for this vessel? clearly both combinations should not be displayed togeather …..or should they?

The arrangement of colours on the mast is a mystery to me, 'Model Slipways' kit photos are not clear enough and all photos of the full size that I have found so far are at a distance. Are they in pairs or combinations of colours? in what order working down the mast? Nothing to date shows the 'funnel mast' lights, I assume that the two facing astern are the white ones but what colour are the ones facing forward and when are they displayed?

I really am getting to the stage of 'giving up' and buying an RTR plastic childlike model, just to get something on the water and binning this kit. I have been seeking this info for months.

I have emailed both MS and the vessel owner over the last two weeks, no replies to date.

            Mike

              Hi Michael,

I had the same problem when I was building my model of Shemarah. There were lots of photos of it on the net but none showed the colours of the lights very clearly. I eventually found a couple of pictures that seemed to give me a definitive guide. I guess Maggie M would be a contemporary of Shemarah so must follow the same rules. Shemarah has been judged in some fairly serious competitions and nobody has told me its wrong (yet)

The picture below shows Shemarah head on and, as best I can judge the foremast/derrick lights are all 'all round' ones and starting from the top and working down are:-

A single white light which must be obscured to some degree by the mast if it is an all round light

              A pair of red lights

              A pair of green lights

              A pair of red lights

              A pair of white lights

There is a single rear facing white light in the mast/ radar mount which is mounted on top of the wheel house and maybe compensates for the white one on the mast being obscured from behind..

There was a better photo but at the moment I am unable to find it.

The 'Maggie M' is a 'trawler', she is designed to drag a trawl net.

A 'Fishing boat' can be a shrimper, crabber which lay out pots, a seine netter, which lays out a long circular net, or even a small craft that takes anglers out to fish with rod & line.

Gareth: Thanks, that is a great help, I still need to find out what the forward facing colour of those on the funnel are.

Mr Woods: Yes 'Maggie M' is a trawler, and as far as I know, catches 'fish', a fishing vessel?!!! As per the above photo I now believe that she would carry both red & green lights covering both eventualities and a masthead light.

Yes she is what many a landlubber would call a 'fishing boat', but she is more accurately a 'fishing trawler', this distinction is very important to other vessels, because it tells them that behind the boat are hundreds of metres of steel hawser & netting which are deemed a hazard, due to the restriction of maneuverability they cause to the trawling vessel.

Hence the difference in the lights displayed by a 'trawler' & those of a plain old fishing boat.

I referred to her as a "Fishing Vessel" not a "boat", if you care to read, and personal insults are NOT in keeping with this forum. I thank you NOT to refer to me as a "Landlubber".

NO personal insult was meant, I was using a generality to describe the masses.

Sorry if you didn't welcome my attempts to help, I certainly shall not offer any again.

Oxford Dictionary Definition of a "Trawler" = "A Fishing Boat used for Trawling. I will seek advice on other sites as some on here are clearly never wrong and refuse to accept the facts. Thanks to those who have treated me with respect.

Moderator Colin. I am sure that it was meant as a 'put down' which I can not accept, we all need to learn and having people looking down on myself and others, (Quote, " The Masses" is NOT acceptable.
