The heating has been on now for several hours in my workshop and when I went in, it was like a sauna.

The textured paint is now nice and hard, no movement under the finger [tested I might admit in a covered area not seen, and so I decided to fit the cabins, and dusted them off just to see what she looked like….[getting excited lol.].

The boat is beginning to look rather nice and exciting.

Tomorrow I'll fit the rubber belting and if that goes well, the red and yellow memorial stripes plus the guards for the rams. There are another couple of things to add to the hull as well and over the next day or so I'll paint and fit these, before I turn my hand to the cabins.

I will also fit the inside of the hull out with battery holders to stop them from moving around on a rough lake.

The fittings to the decks, stanchions, cleats, and all other stuff to detail the decks will be added lastly, so that I don't break anything.

had my first problem tonight with the Tyne.

I thought I would put the "D" rubber belting around the parimeter of the hull at deck level.

Unfortunately the stickiness of the stickyback tape had lost its grab, and so i am going to have to go down another route.

i have in my workshop a tube of glue in a dispensing gun that is supposed to stick anything to averything, called CT1, AND i have used it before on model boats to do just that………

and so i have masked off a "channel the width of the "D" section rubber, and will now contemplate for the rest of the night whether to put the CT1 onto the hull or on to the rubber, as it only goes on one part, and thinly………but it is the constituancy of normal silicon sealant so not much is needed, and its bloody messy and taked up to 4 – 6 hours to set, so it is going to have to be held in place…………..could do with 6 hands.

but please dont recomend i use evostick contact adhesive as i used that on the last boat i built and wasn't too happy with the result or neatness of it as a finished unit., and as the CT1 is black in colour any small excess will blend in with the rubber..

          a dirty sticky messy job……

but someone has to do it, lol.

the rubber was the recipient of the CT1 glue and spred onto the flat surface whilst the rubber was stuck down to a wooden board.

it was then just taken from the board to the boat section by section until it ran around the boat.

it was taped to the boat with masking tape, and will take about 6 hours to set………i'll go to the workshop at the end of my tv viewing tonight to see how its going……..

but dont worry Dave Stavros Jones, the textured deck is now well and truly cured and stuck firmly to the grp deck.

Took the chance this morning of applying the last piece of rubber belting around the curved transom.

I cut the angled joints at both ends to mate up with the long piece running around the length of the boat, and before adding the CT1 glue to the final strip I pumped some CT1 into the open ends of the two "D" sections of the strip laid last night and into the short strip about to be applied, so that when it all joins up and cured insde the belting, it will make an unbreakable bond and hold the joints together, that is of course unless this clumsy sod damages it whilst sailing.

The only problem was that the outlets for the bilge pump water escapes were glued too high on the transom, and so I cut two recesses into the belting to fit around them………….sod the rivet counters,

The boat is now set aside in a heated workshop until much later tonight when I'll remove all the masking tape and see what "damage" I've done. hummmpphhhh

Rubber belting successfully glued on and very firmly stuck,

              masking tape removed.

memorial yellow and red stripes put in place.

              white waterlining taped up…….

              NOW I'm really getting excited.

tomorrow the engine exhausts ram, guards and rams painting , and then on to the cabins….whoopeee!!!!

That Textured Deck looks awesome. I used that stuff for the roads on my Model railway.

The Trims has made these pop now!

looks horrible when you first spray it on George………..but the transformation over a period of a few hours is amazing……….but so gooey that it cloggs the can exit tube and there is nothing you can do to resurect whats left in the can sadly

the beginning of the end is nigh….

                          painting has begun.

the parts now in filler primer are to be sprayed silver enamel once all parts are dry, but i have just realised that i have not yet affixed the guard rail brackets to the deck grating and so these will be attached with glue and rivets once the filler primer has dried and is able to be sanded to the resin to glue properly, and not just to paint.

the engine exhausts and the trim tab ram guards are alsi being painted.

sprayed polar gray and dry fitted………..

only a temporary fitting, as i think it will be far easier to do the work that needs to be done on the flying bridge whilst the grating is left off for better access.

                              Ram guards painted and fitted.

Enhine exhausts painted and holes drilled, tape cut and ready for fitting,

and finally the rope 'chain guard for the stern rubber fendering has been cut from a piece of piping, shaped and sanded, then painted ready foe fitting when dry…every little bit added makes the model look a little more interesting.

today, i decided to get the window frames ready for fitting in to the cabin…….all 15 of them.

firstly i had to decide whether to paint them or leave them in their natural colour which was coloured alluminium. there was such delicate detailing on the rims that i thought they would be spoiled if i sprayed the windows, and so left them as they had come.

Decided to leave the frames as they are, and have been fiddling with then the rest of the afternoon.

After looking at them as to the process of installing the "glass"……..[thin clear plastic] I realised that there was actually a groove running around the interior of the window frame to seat the clear plastic in to, and so disgarded the original thicker plastic sheet for thinner stuff.

I cut them to size including the amount allowed for sitting into the groove and cut to fit.
All window frames now "glazed" and ready to glue into the cabin this evening.

i take absolutely no credit for that, Richard.

my friend Dave Stavros Jones insists on painting my orange lifeboats for me, as he knows just how impatient i am with my painting…..and he did it for me last november, but it is a lovely finish as you say. he did the hull as well.

Neil, fabulous work as always. Attention to detail fantastic.

when looking at the stern of these things and the various shields and guards you wonder why they did not go to jet drives much earlier?

Painting, or spraying, is an art. It demands practice and the right facilities for the job. Usually I wait for a nice dry day and spray with rattle cans in the garden but having some sort of booth would be a godsend (and take up room for only occasional use). I do have all the gear and have sprayed motor bike bits and my Bond bug, in the past but it’s a faff for a tiny thing like a model boat.

One benefit of “big” spraying is being able to keep the surfaces wet for longer so the paint flows. The last boat was tricky as it was all angles and cans do not have the coverage of a small touch-up type spray gun.

i take absolutely no credit for that, Richard.

my friend Dave Stavros Jones insists on painting my orange lifeboats for me, as he knows just how impatient i am with my painting…..and he did it for me last november, but it is a lovely finish as you say. he did the hull as well.

You just have to stop him putting two fluffy dice and a nodding dog in the bridge window and go faster stripes down the sides!!

Wish I had a painting-person in the 'wings'. Never-the -less, your models are å joy to behold Neil. So much own-produced detail to enjoy. Sometimes I feel that I'm cheating by ordering so many small parts from CMB, but I'd never be finished otherwise!

                                                  George

to be honest George, i am absolutely crap at painting…….far too impatient………and for many a year i built kits, in fact quite a few kit reviews for the mags including Model Boats in the hayday of the kit producing years[ now much sadly gone with retirement of company owners] but in between kits and before i learned to cast fittings, i used to fabricate my own fittings by usung plasticard and brass by imitating fittings i had seen on my own model kit reviews………after all a winch is a winch, and once you have mastered the knowledge and what goes where by looking at th real, model or plans for such an item it becomes a lot easier………….and of course, a laithe helps, lol.

its just application on the knowledge that you already have…….and from what i have seen from your build you have plenty of that in the work you have done.

                                                    Ashley

agree with everything you say Ashley…….but even with a £200 quid American produced air brush that i bought when retiring from teaching i was still crap…………..far too impatient when painting.

as for fluffy dice Richard, i won't go that far, but i do have a 1;12 scale teddy bear to go onto the steering consol of the Tyne……one was given to the crew of the fleetwood boat as a mascot after the boat towed their disabled yacht in some years ago…… and it has pride of place inside the cabin of the boat, lol.

painted the rear step for the coxs'n, the engine room extracter vents and the consol for the steering position and instruments today.
