Thank you for your kind comments, Ian

I enjoy thinking up these little ideas, when the need arises

As for a column in the mag……..This Forum is an extension to the magazine really, and doing it this way, takes the pressure off me. It`s qiute difficult dreaming up solutions to imaginary problems!

          Hello Paul

Precise wire bending is extremely difficult at times!

I'm about to make a start on the Glasgow handrails and not looking forward to it at all!

Luckily, it's only thin stuff and I might get away with it…….About 0.8mm

            Bob

Just got in from the shed and have come up with this.

            handy-hand-grab-tool.jpg

Very similar to your idea but not as strong in the gripping department.

            Paul

What are you guys making? It looks like my Grans Pickle fork!.

              Hello Len

Paul is lost in France at the moment for about twelve months and he is gorging himself on those frogs legs things!

Unfortuneately, some of those pesky frogs keep trying to hop it, so he came up with his patent frog picker?

But it's absolutely useless for fettling castings!

Hold on a minute!……If Paul is lost in France…….How come he just emerged from his shed?????

              Time for an explanation?

                The explanation is elementary

You are smart Dr. Bob you will figure it out.

                        My dear Holmes

                        Simply consider the facts:

'I am lost in France but my shed is at home and yet I managed to get something out of the shed'

Logically there are only two conclusions….either I have a multi-dimensional shed or I have ?????

You have dug your own personal tunnel, from somewhere in France to somewhere in Blighty?

                          Or you've built a Tardis?

This Eureka Moment will only be appreciated by modellers with some engineering background!………So don`t be too disappointed with the idea if yer not!

The building board has been supporting the Bandsaw for the last ten years or so!……Needless to say, it sags a bit in the middle!

Not good news for an essential dead flat board!

                                level screws.jpg

Then came one of my finest Moments!

See the screws with the arrows?………Yep…….They go right through the building board………So what?

SO WHAT!……….They are now LEVELLING SCREWS!……..The engineers answer to precision!

The board is now DEAD FLAT!……….Like it?………..I sure do Bob

                                Bob with tears of joy

                                  Bob,

The Gremlins devil will pay you a nocturnal visit and they will adjust those screws without you realising it.

And so you will actually be building a Sovereign of the Seizure….

                                  Sorry!

You`ve got to admit, having a dead flat working surface is really nice……..What surface do you work on when a flat surface is essential?

Anyway, I hope the Gremlins do pay a visit as I take great delight in levelling up!

There are no local model shops in the area now and mail order was too slow

This is an old Eureka Moment from yesteryear

I needed to drill about 100 portholes and it was vital that they were spot on!

                                                    Yep!….Another jig was called for!

I used the top edge of the hull as the datum and a block clamped to the jig plate acted as the guide. The drill plate had three accurately drilled holes and one hole was used for a location pin.

It was very pleasing and satisfying to see the rows of port holes……Spot on!…….Any deviation would have ruined the effect completely!

                                                    Portholes

Applying waterlines is very important on a model boat….when it comes to the discerning eye!

Using the plastic sticky stuff is ok but it has it`s limitations, ie……The same width from fore to aft

The stern end is the problem!…….It normally requires "Flaring"

So I`ve come up with a reasonable solution……..Use paper! ……and with a few coats of clear varnish………Bob`s yer Uncle?
