More money than sense

Two motors are fine in some boats and would look out of place with one motor BUT,if you want manoeuvrability then for a cheap option use one motor and a Fishtail Rudder. If you have a look on my gallery you will see a sketch of one that will spin your boat within its own length. this IS a Fishtail Rudder the articulated one seen elsewhere is something else.

Try one and see the difference it makes.

Ah yes but two powerful motors and two fishtail rudders would make a very interesting combination.

Try it on a 4ft MTB and see the difference that they make.

You do not have Fishtail Rudders as far as I know young man.

The sketch was drawn for me by Ron Burchett a Canadian Tug Captain and model Tug builder.

Now Gentlemen this is developing into a Canadian standoff..  

Is it possible that the Canadian version of a fishtail rudder might be different to the English version and that you both could be right (or wrong as the case might be) After all if they both perform the same function by increasing the boats maneuverability then they both qualify for the title of "Fishtail" rudder.

Hi Bob: Yes I am just about functional again and have started building my 6ft TID tug using a free flooding hull utilising the "Bobs plank" design.

Hi Len: Have you had any more entrants in the "scrap boat" contest? If the event were any closer I would enjoy having a go myself.

I`m very pleased to read that you are slowly improving….but don`t you dare overdo things!…….Doctors orders!!!!

I`m also very interested in your latest free fllooding hull model….keep us all up to date please

At our latest club regatta, one of our members had a large cargo boat with 100 lb of lead in it and a 4 inch prop and burnt out the ESC in about 5 minutes……..this was the model that got me thinking about the Plank idea in the first place!

He could get highjacked on the way home for his load it this day and age of lead off roofs Bob! and he only had a 15amp ESC in at the time which he has replaced with a 40 amp one I believe.

Hi Paul,

Competition was a complete non starter as no other paddlers entered!,so I put my two in the Lake,the Mark 1 did not fare very well but the Mark2 which was a corruption of your design chuntered its way accross the Lake with a few friendly nudges in the right direction from a nearby tug.

It did 1 1/2 crossings on 4 xAA cells before fatige and debris halted it.

What a shame that nobody else bothered to have a go…it would have been such a lot of fun.

I am glad that M2 worked for you and I hope that it lived up to expectations, I am tempted to build a bigger version to carry on testing the inboard paddle theory.

I am also sorry that nobody else had a model on the day, we can only do what we can to try and encourage others to enter what should have been a great little event. The club just does not seem to want to be competative.

Bob I am afraid that Len is right your rudder is in fact a Becker rudder,often used on tugs and fishing boats, Len’s sketch is correct for a fishtail rudder
