Hi all, I’m just about to start on this kit – my first at this scale. I have a couple of questions: trying to source a supply of anchor chain for the kit and not sure of the size of links in the chain. Also signal flags – the kit comes with admiralty flags, jacks and ensigns but no signal flags so if anyone knows anyone who supplies these at 1:350th scale I’d be grateful.

Hi Phillip and welcome to the forum.

I don't ACTUALLY know what size chain you would need but probably as small as you can get. The pound shops , or similar, for cheap costume jewellery are a good source of chain.

Unless someone has built thgis size of model and can tell us, then I would just go for "small"…this may mean 1mm or less, and it is possible that chain to the proper scale does not look right, as the links are too small to see especially once painted and it just looks like cotton , but that's just a thought.

Build the boat up to the point where you really need the chain and then start looking is what I would do. Lay some on and decide if you like the look.

I suggest you Google 1:350 scale anchor chain – it comes up with lots of results for modellers. But of course there is no specific actual size as 1:350 scale chain for one type of model would be a lot diffrent from another with battleships at the high end of the scale. The smaller the original prototype, the smaller the chain will be.

As with many things, a bit of research is needed. Also Google Battleship Anchor Chains – again a lot of info online.

Thank you for your responses, it looks like Google will be my friend on this build. Since I posted I found a company called Maritime Models which sells studded anchor chain in various sizes, so I’ll be speaking with them tomorrow. They also sell signal flags in various scales too.

                Hi Phillip.

I'm building a 1/128th model of HMS Duke of York, sister ship of HMS Prince of Wales. I've bought some good photos of her fitting out in John Brown's shipyard on the Clyde from the National Records of Scotland. From these, the each link in the anchor chains of the KGV class battleships was approximately 18 inches long by 12 inches wide and was shaped like an oval figure of "8". Scaling down, these would be approximately 1.3mm long by 0.9mm wide at 1/350 scale.

                I hope this helps.

All the best with the build.

                Paul.

BTW – on the Tamiya model the bilge keels of the Prince of Wales project too far aft than in the real ship. They actually ended at a point on the hull level with the where the forward legs of the main (aft) mast met the roof of the aft superstructure (boat deck).

Thanks Paul, had a feeling the keel was wrong as for chain, although the Pontos aftermarket kit has chain it’s only 18 centimetres- not quite enough so I’ve used it to measure the chain I need which is 26 links to the inch fortunately Maritime Models sells chain this fine by the metre.
