      @beamish
      Hallo

      I was wondering if anyone has any specs on the ‘Economy’ 540/12 motors (with torque ring) offered over at Astec?

      Have a couple here (marked 268 on case) and was hoping to drop them in a Rother class Lifeboat on 6V, two ESC’s and 45mm 3 blade props

      Many thanks

          Call Astec, I have called in the past and they have been very helpful !

          I would have thought that the above combination would be a bit sluggish myself, 45mm is a fair size prop for a 540, especially on only 6v  if an economy version ?

            Rule of thumb for direct drive is not to fit props which are larger in diameter than the case of the motor. In this case you’re 10mm over, so that’s out. Also 6v is very limiting in terms of available and suitable motors.
            I’d recommend using something like Speed 720BB Torque motors on 12 volts. There are cheaper alternatives to these motors e.g. MMD 777, MMB/ACTion755.

              Many thanks Ashley and Dave for your advice and suggestions.
              You both confirm my own thoughts on the motor size,  but I’m not sure what effect adding the torque ring would have on the 540. Having briefly looked at other motor manufacturers data, it appears the torque ring will roughly halve the rpm (ideal) and increase torque available enabling the motor to spin a larger prop.
              The prop size is as supplied in the kit (I’ve replaced this with Brass), and interestingly Dave Metcalf says in the instructions that he fitted a pair of 545’s and the boat is described as ‘over scale speed’.
              Using 6volts, that’s just me trying to use my surplus batteries, but happy to fit 12volt if more appropriate.

              Your further thoughts are most welcome and if anyone else has built this kit I would be interested in your experience

              Pete
