        Hello John

I`ve always used off white bed linen with machine sewn hems by my wife.

Good enough for me anyway………….below is my Britannia yacht…….sails well!

I too would like to know what is the best material for old fashioned looking cloth sails for my stand off scale J class and also how to get the right shape. The professional sail makers only seem to be able to work in modern materials such as Mylar and stick the panels together rather than sewing them. The rules for the class give maximum sail dimensions but this does not tell me how much curve to put in the cloth etc. Any help or leads to useful websites appreciated. Thanks, Ian.

            Thank’s Bob.
Tell me that. What happens if the sails get wet? Does the bed linen material get heavy?

            John

              Hello John

The sals get very heavy when wet………………Sandy Cousins recommends Silicon oil to be sprayed on vintage sails and I assume this would stop the rain from soaking the sail cloth………….I haven`t tried it though

Hmmmm, I would preffer then a set of sails from modern material, in the right collor (light sepia or ochra, almost white, vintage looking but modern performancewise).

Any fellow sailor who knows the right resources.. fountain?

                John

If you want dry sails, try Kite material, afterall it is Spinaker Sail Nylon!! and comes in lots of colours.

                  Len.
