The Slo mo Shun is a super boat and I am very pleased that you are thinking of building it….what scale will you use?……..something big I hope, say 1:12

Peirre built one a while back and posted some photos.

I have got a set of plans, if you want them I can email them to you

              Hello there, Paul

There`s a build of the Slo Mo Shun model on this website and would you believe it?

              It hasn`t got a driver!…….tut tut

There was a programme on the telly about the full size boat some time ago and I was interested then…….but it was probably during one of my big ship projects….so the idea just faded away

In the top picture, it has two drivers?

Have a look at http://www.lesliefield.com/boats_teams/1950_u27.htm it covers the boat with two drivers.

The model looks to be the size I`m thinking about…………it also looks…IC?

That black and white model I posted a picture of, a few weeks ago, had the latest Graupner motor in and is about the same size as S M S X 2……………and the builder is our resident expert……..John Goddard………….should be a good starting point

We have another expert on brushless motors too…….he made the Aqua Riva speedie boat

Re your problem selecting a suitable motor.
How about looking at the problem from a different angle…..for instance just how fast do you want the model to go ….scale speed or as fast as possible….given the potential light weight of the finished model you might not need such a huge motor.

Another thought is that with a bigger motor more battery power and hence more weight will be required (and space within the hull) there is a trade off between power pack size and motor size….I know its an obvious statement but I have found that re-examining fundamental questions can sometimes solve a problem.

Lastly how shallow an angle can you install the prop shaft at and can you use a surface piercing propeller.

Just some thoughts that have probably already occurred to you.

Another thought have a word with Dave at Action he has access to some fantastic motors from down under have a look at this  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcDsCpqidY there is a photo on page 7 of the Barrel Back thread

I know what you`re on about…suppose scale speed is the right way to go……………………I`m thinking about building the model, above water…model aircraft style…………..balsa and solar film!!!!

I`m also thinking of just building the kit ………………..as the kit looks lovely!

Still thinking….there`s no rush…it`s summer still!

Don`t fancy finishing the model…mid winter either!!!

Finally made a start on the large version of Slo Mo.

Laying out the formers, twice the kit size, and is heavy going at the moment.
Having to do all manner of tricks to cut the 23″ formers out on the 12″ bandsaw.

Got plenty of balsa and may use it fot the sub planking, with the Mahog veneer on top and lavishly finished TFC style!

Think about the latest Graupner motor, running on 30 v

Looking at the plan, the rear fin seems to be connected to the rudder and operates aircraft style?

Progress is very slo at the Mo……for all manner of reasons!…….lol

I understand the problem with the bandsaw……. have you thought about using a jigsaw?
The barrel back hasnt progressed at all over the past week as I have been busy on other things.
Dont know about the fin being connected to the rudder, I will have a look at the different sets of plans that I have and see if the detail is shown.

                              Paul

TFC style?…I dont know that one

The question of the fin was easier that I thought as a quick look through my collection of photos showed that the fin does have an aircraft style rudder.

So it does have an aircraft type fin!……..Well done Paul………For some reason, the fin is not aerofoiled at all and looks rather clumsy?????……..On my model, it will be 16mm wide with square corners!

What an amazing story?……all that fuss over a fin……it must have had some effect for them to experiment with it!

The fin btw is not 16mm but 40mm on the model!……..interesting?

Just cutting out the formers in a sort of dopey bored trance……it`s labour consumimg at the Mo…but only got two to do now

Looking forward to seeing it in 3D

I find when researching into the history of some boats that they have an amazing history either through the design process or in what the boat actually did, one day I will have to write a small piece on the history of the barrel back called Kay that my model is based on.

Progress is a bit slow on the Slo!………..Due to days out in our campervan and the sheer boredom of making the formers!……………..and the camera has conked out!……..Gone for repair, but nowt to photograph at the Mo!………(get these little puns!)

All the formers are cut out but need final adjusting……made the spine too………but also missed your encouragement really!

The forum has been very quiet during your absense…….we needed your comments on all subjects to stimulate responses!

                                              Anyway, Sunshine……welcome back!

But now for the fun part!………..Going to enjoy the challenge of building a big `un!

Pity you didn’t buy a bigger Campervan and then you could have done some building whilst the two ladies in your life went go “walkies” ,mind you with all your building stuff perhaps a 53 bus would be better with the top floor a workshop hey.
