        Hello Chaps

Just found this fascinating etching of the building of Holyhead Breakwater. in about 1858, and in the background is my favourite old ship….The Great Eastern.
Holyhead was the ships first port of call……………..What a wonderful sight it must have been?

          Hi Bob
Lovely etching!  Refresh my memory – Great Eastern – Brunel’s masterpiece?
Holyhead? – where is that?  Sorry, we’re not all UK residents and I’m too lazy to flash up Google Earth!
          Cheers – Pierre

            Hello Pierre

Have you not seen my Great Eastern album?………………It`s a “must see”………imo

Holyhead is at the top north east corner of Anglesey, which is part of North Wales

The etching is viewed from the seaward end of the breakwater and in the background is Holyhead mountain.

Holyhead is a major port for ships going to Ireland

There is a pub  on the banks of the river Mersey at  Rock Ferry were the Great Eastern was laid up  called appropriately  “The Great Eastern”  Now closed or it was about two months back. But  much of the interior was decorated with timbers and  paneling used  to furnish that  Victorian  engineering  master piece.

                Hello Dave

I wish you had told me earlier!

Have you got a SatNav ref?…………….I`d like to take a look, soon……..in case they are knocking it down!

I always thought that the interior panelling would be used again somewhere, the cabins were sold off as garden summer houses

Hello Bob   try  “New Ferry road ” If you are  motoring from the M53  take the A41 to Birkenhead  and as you approch New Ferry continue straight on past the Levers and   Port Sunlite village.   New Ferry road is on your right hand side just before the post office . This takes you over  the Rock Ferry by pass and  the Great Eastern in directly in front . Martin Morrow an active  member of the Ellesmere Port club lives almost next to the pub . He will be at the show over the weekend. and will know more regarding its present condition. Hope this helps

                    Hello Dave

Thanks for the info………………….Just been looking on the net and the Great Eastern closed in 2007 and is being considered for demolition!

I`ve also been looking at your correspondence regarding the GE `s engines etc…………..all very interesting

If the pub gets demolished, will the relics be saved????…….I hope so!

Does the Maritime museum at Liverpool know about this?

                    See you at Ellesmere…………………Bob

Hi Bob had a conversation   with Martin  regarding the GE artifacts and these are still in place. So if you wanted to see them then  perhaps you may want to contact the brewery that ran the GE pub. Hope this is of some help.

Thank you Dave…………..I think you passed me yesterday, going up the steps at Ellesmere………if you can recall?

I`ve notified Liverpool Maritime Museum………….but no reply, except for the automated acknowledge type…………….It`s on a website, in the local news and is under threat of demolision, to make way for flats etc

I`m very surprised the Brunel Museum have not got involved………….there was a big fuss a few years back when a piece of chimney was found!
