Hoping to use the collective wisdom (?) of the list

I have a self contained outside garage, which I use as a workshop. Over the years, I’ve fitted it with workbenches, shelves, tool racks etc etc. I do all my work out there and store all my models there as well.

My problem is that so much dust and sawdust accumulates in the air that even covering my models with drop cloths doesn’t seem to help. Chief culprits are a small disc sander and a scroll saw. I have an old vacuum cleaner which I wield energetically, but it’s not enough!

I have grandiose plans of (trying ) to install some sort of vacuuming air conditioning system, something that will extract all the dust in the air, maybe switch itself on when I open the door, switch itself off when I leave – OK probably an ON/OFF switch is more realistic!

Any one have any ideas?

I don’t think there is any easy answer Pierre. The biggest problem is of course when you want to do some brush or spray painting. I used to have a vacuum which would blow as well as suck which was quite useful in getting dust off work in progress. If I need to do spray painting I tend to do it outside these days. Ideally any sanding should be done outside the main workshop but in reality that is not always practical.

Pierre,

Some saws and sanders are deigned to be attached to a vacuum cleaner when in use. I guess yours are not so equiped.

You might consider fitting some tubing to the tool or bench (under bench?), connect the other end to a vacuum cleaner and adjust things until most/all of the dust is sucked away when using the tools.

As for covering models, I try to put mine in boxes, for storage and transport, and this seems to keep them clean.

ArneS has hit the nail on the head and has discribed the system in my workshop.

I have fitted some 2 x 1in rectangular plastic trunking around the walls with short lengths of hoover hose connecting to the dust extract points on the tools.

A large bagless vacuum is connected to the other end of thr trunking and this keeps the dust down when I am cutting, sanding or spraying.

I have a 60 x 60cm fan that I position at the door of my shed to suck the dust out.

What is also important, is the room ventilation to get rid of ……….Superglue fumes!

I`ve had some very bad reactions from the evaporating fumes in the past……………… I now always place a fan near an open window!

I`ve had runny noses……..sore eye lids…………….itchy rashes on the neck…….bouts of sneezing………………and constant advice from the wife!

Yes Bob, I’m allergic to superglue too. One whiff and it’s three days of bad hayfever symptoms. I can tolerate the odourless version though but you really need a “kicker” with it to make it stick quickly.

Thanks to all who replied – I really like the idea of a pipe at the back of the workbench (thanks Arne) connected to a vacuum cleaner, maybe with plug in points for vacuum hoses (thanks Paul).

Off to see my local hardware shop come the weekend!

David…did you mention something about Paul`s workshop, ie THE ONE WE HAVNT SEEN YET ?

Paul, I like the trunking idea around the workshop to enable different machines to be connected to the jolly old vacuuum cleaner. I may contemplate something like that, I have the wall space….as you can see from the PICTURE OF MY WORKSHOP. Ashley
