Back in the dawn of time when we only had 3 tv channels there was a programmme on BBC2 called,i think, model or modlers world introduced by a rather portly looking gent intoducing all sorts of models and to go with this telly prog there was a book with the plans of a leander class frigate.I’ve tried to get the book but it’s out of print  so has anyone got a set of plans i an beg/borrow/steal or buy as i’ve been aching to build this for years as a tribute to my father whose last ship was a cat class frigate HMS PUMA.Dad is suffering with mild Altsihmers and i hope that this may bring back some memories.

andy, there is a model of a Leander for sale on ebay at the moment that you might be interested in, that needs building. the item number is 320218920196. it would seem to be a bit of a bargain at the moment.

              Hi Andy,

There is a book specifically about the Cats and Cathedrals, see the following link – its the 6th book down the list:

              Cats and Cathedrals book

Also a question, why do you want a set of Leander Class plans if your interest is with Cat class? They are quite different!   I’m pretty sure there are builders plans available for the Cat Class – try the National Maritime Museum, or the Glasgow University Archives.

              Pete.

I thought I remembered someone who made some Type 41 (Cat Class) products. A quick google and…

                Cammetts

When you go to their website, at the top there is a "Select a Category" dropdown list. Select the "Scale Caliber Model Ships Range". This will list a mix of Type 12 (Whitby / Leander class), Type 41 (Cats) and Type 61 (Cathedrals).

They do a Type 41 glassfibre hull in 1/96, loads of fittings, and also sell a 1/96 plan for a Type 41 both in pre and post modernisation forms – I’m sure one of them will be close to your Dad’s ship. Robin Cammett’s products are very high quality – I’ve seen them. Also I think he served on these ships so I think he would be pretty helpful if you drop him a line to talk about your project.

This should give you a flying start!

                Pete.

On Ebay, an 8ft long HMS Leander model is for sale, should this be of interest.

The year was 1975, the portly gentleman was Bob Symes-Shutzman (think I’ve spelt that correctly) and the program was ‘Model World’

It was not so much a book, more like a overgrown magazine and I found a copy in a second hand bookshop a couple of years ago.  It is tucked away safely while I get on with some decorating but I’ll see if I can dig it out in a day or two.

                                Hi Andy,

Last year at the Ellesmere Boat Show I picked up a very neat motor/gearbox (named M7G) for £5.50 from Action Electronics which I intend fitting into my  Boston Typhoon later this year.  They are on the web if you want a quick look.

                                Cheers – Ken

                                    Hi Andy,

The program was by Bob Symes, He was quite a modeler. He introduced the model ship which was designed and built for the program by Vic Smeed. It was intended as an introduction to model making and is very easy to make. The program shows the main stages in the build.  I have a copy of the program on a dvd which I copied from an old tape recorded at the time. If you want it I can run off a copy of the disk and post it to you.

But i’m wethering the storms and scrounging bits and bob’s here and there. The latest addition is the crew all dressed in white shorts and shirts with white knee high socks .I got my crew from the revel german u boat crew and have just painted the figures as needed and they look ok from a distance. Most of the super stucture is on and i just need a wasp helicopter in1/72 scale to finish it off not to mention a pair of bofors. So my friends in model boatin land please look in your scrap box for me many thanks andy
